Just looked at the same flight I am taking Wed (Delta from ATL) today, the flight left Atlanta but they had to divert to Managua. Looks like they will be spending the night then leaving in the morning for SJO. I assume airline takes responsibility for accommodations? Does Managua have Western hotels?

No. The airline is not responsible for accommodations in the event of a natural disaster or weather. However, when a Legacy airline like Delta lands in a country other than the country of departure and the planned country of arrival, they are often quite generous. At the very least, Delta would assist passengers with making hotel arrangements.

Managua has some decent hotels.

Yes, Turrialba erupted again today sending ash 2.5Km high and yes, San Jose airport is closed again. No word on when it will re-open but it hasn't had to close more than around 16 hours for any of the other eruptions. Anyone coming down this week should keep an eye on things...

So far, they haven't cancelled the 6am arrivals (delayed flights from today) yet so that is some good news...

Those flights are already delayed...

The airlines just don't want people to know that, yet.

United landed in Liberia, and American landed in Panama City. There is no United or American Airlines crew base in San José.

I'm not a travel guy... I'm a finance guy. But my friend, who IS the travel guy, that I am visiting here in San José, already has new flights and times for his clients. Of course, those flights and times might change, but he's ahead of the game.

Tomorrow's flight schedule is already phucked. The airlines just aren't letting people know that, yet.

--------------

One trick that often works quite well, in these instances, is to move your departure to Liberia. Do it on the phone. For God's sake, DO NOT go to SJO.
