I'm curious why they made all the customers remain on-site during this lengthy process. The only thing I can think of based on them asking the girls if they were there of their own free will...is maybe they thought a pimp or two were onsite & they wanted to question the girls before letting any guy leave.

If they want to enforce their immigration laws, more power to them. But why keep the obvious male foreigners on-site, particularly when most could prove their travel itinerary on their smartphones? From what I heard, they didn't harass the customers. My friend didn't have his ID and he had no problem except the painful wait while other options like the bar at SL closed for the night.

Law and ORDER!!!

They look for illegals (many local gringos do not follow the immigration rules as well) and maintain order until they are done to prevent problems. No different then in the states. No big deal and happens in locations they expect to find undocumented immigrants.

I was there last night (Saturday) and it seemed pretty normal, maybe a bit slower than usual, but in my experience Saturdays are not the best night, as all the hot girls have dates, either with their real bf's (more likely girlfriends haha) or us fantasy bf's.

Chatted with a couple guys and they thought the same, severe lack of high end chicas, but lots of regulars.

I finally spotted one that was a solid 7.652, tall, slim, from Heredia, early twenties I'd say. I didn't have a good feeling about her to be honest, but I was on a mission. She was wearing flowered skin tight shorts, and had great legs, if you're a leg man.

Talking to her my feeling about her didn't change, I had serious doubts, just no chemistry, haughty attitude, not much eye contact.

But, as desperation sank in I decided to buy her a drink and see if she'd warm up. She orders whiskey red bull, huge red flag. Then she wants to start negotiating before the drink even arrives. Another red flag. I am starting to think how best to cut my losses, but when she asks for cien I counter with 40 mil, just to see what she says.

Just then her drink arrives, she snaps it up, turns to go and over her shoulder says it's cien or nothing, thanks for the drink.

What a total b. Thank god she didn't accept my lower offer, I might have been stupid enough to go with her.

I'm still pisssed at her attitude, so I follow her and tell her and her friends their attitude sucks, and I'll make sure anyone I know will hear about it. Elaine (her nom de guerre of course) gives me a nasty scowl and hands me back the drink, saying , fine I don't want your drink.

I didn't really need another drink, but I took it anyway, lol.

So, YMMV, but I'd avoid this chica, obviously.

Went to KL, where the (formerly) blonde bartender from DR now seems to work. She was on the dance floor with some guy, then 15 minutes later she was behind the bar. I don't know what the hell her game is, but I'm going to find out. She's probably a disaster but sometimes hot messes can be fun.

Finally met a cute spinner tica (Helena? Elena?) from Guapiles, and we hit it off immediately. I offer her a drink and she orders a beer. Good sign. She's very touchy feely, another good sign. By this time it's maybe 1 am or later, so I'm ready to go. She of course asks for cien, I counter 40 mil, and she accepts immediately.

She's maybe not the most experienced in bed, but I like that. Chemistry is great, and despite my being quite drunk at that point, I don't last more than 30 minutes. She seemed to be really getting into it, so I'd see her again for sure, and maybe at an earlier hour when I'm more sober and have more energy.

My rating system is very scientific, trust me! And now she's been reduced to a 3.0125 due to bad attitude.

I forgot to add, just as I was leaving the DR parking lot don't I see EXACTLY my type walking from KL to DR, dammit! I almost parked my car again to chase after her, at least to get her contact info, but then I thought, what the hell, she'll be here next Saturday night too.

But if only I had just a little more patience...or if I was younger and could stay up all night like when I was in my twenties. :|

Curious -

I generally carry around a photo copy of my passport and entry stamp. Has anybody ever been asked for their actually passport? If so and you didn't have it what were the consequences?

I was asked for my passport once, while driving through Costa Rica at a checkpoint in a small town. We had them on us as we were leaving Arenal to go to CoCo Beach for a few days, so there was no issue.

I've always heard that a color photocopy was good enough.

I'd also like to know if that's ever been a problem for anybody.

I never carry my passport unless I am going to have to have it (at the bank or embassy, etc.). I always carry a plastic incased credit card size color copy of the main page and the most recent visa entry stamp). The law, and the recommendation by the CR government, is that you carry a color copy of your main page and visa stamp. Many guys carry only a black and white copy. I have never heard of anyone having a problem with a B&W copy, but for the c1000 that the plastic incased copy costs I would rather be safe than sorry.

Over the years I have heard of guys being hassled by the local police for having a copy and not their real passport. THIS IS A SCAM by some police to extract money form the tourist. If you have this problem, tell them to take you to the police station and they will back down because they know they will lose. I have been in MPs or the REY probably 10 or more times when the police came in to inspect visas, licenses, permits, for drugs, and in the MPs, for liquor consumption. Every time they have asked for my passport, I have given them my copy, they have run it thru the computer, and handed it back thanking me!! never a problem!!

I carry a color copy of my passport and driver's license. I have spent the past several December and January's at a beach town in the Nicoya Peninsula and have been stopped at several police check points. Have not had a problem with my color copy of passport, which always remains locked in a safe where I stay.

last line above should read, "Have not had a problem with my color copy of passport, with the original always locked in a safe where I stay."

I usually ask my guest house or hotel for a color photo copy of my passport + my entry stamp page. I also have a local SIM card with data & store a copy of my itinerary, boarding passes, hotel/guest house reservations, etc. on Google Drive. Plus, I download a local copy (or take a picture - meaning this is stored on my phone) in case I have issues with any SIM cards - but with a truly unlocked Android, never has been an issue to date.

My friends tried to rent a car recently in CR and they wanted to keep their passport. This is often a suggested requirement in Asia. If they ask, best to offer them your driver's license or passport card (if you have one) plus pay the deposit instead. If not, move on to the next rental agency. I would never turn over my actual passport to a vendor in any country.

Keep a copy of your passport, entry stamp, and flight itinerary in Google Drive (Android or iOS) and stored to your phone locally in case you don't have internet access to the cloud via your data plan or WiFi.

I've been in 7 countries in the past 60 days, with no problems. Even countries with military coups & news making anti-government protests. You'll be fine if you have a charged phone & reasonable documentation.

What baffles me is the current $80 - $100 / per 45-60 mins rate going in SJO + drinks + taxi + propina. In Asia, Pattaya literally has a scene well over 100 times the size of San Jose. And that $80 - $100 you spent gets you a nice hotel, local transportation, meals for 24 hours, and 24 hour companionship. No time limits. No Gringo pricing. No can't see the skin before you buy. If the CR government doesn't want you & the Tica's rip you off with silly pricing (do a GDP per capita from your country to theirs to see what you are really paying), then move on. Other countries will welcome you with open arms.

IMHE with the local street constabulary in San Jose: they do not like B&W copies, they'll accept (grudgingly) a color copy on office paper, they'll accept (but frown at) the laminated miniature copies as they try to read it (and they expect the entry stamp on the back or it's not accepted), BUT ... they will still ask where your passport is.

It all comes down to how much trouble you are in. In the worst of mine, they actually called my hotel, asked if I was staying there, and asked them to verify that my passport was in the safe. The hotel (HLH) refused to do so, but offered to open the door if they came on site to search.
