The young lady at the SL front desk made a mistake. Lifetime membership is not $150.

Look at the VIP Member Information link at the top of every CRT page.

IMO opinion a major change that affected the board (with veteran members anyway) was the change in ownership. Hundreds of us had met the original founders or at least Tomas and considered him a friend. We shared good times in the gulch, knew he was passionate about CR and the board which motivated many of us to contribute to help the site succeed. Now we have no idea who owns or admins the site and their lack of communication makes it appear that they really don't care about your concerns. It is a shame to lose current info posted by non VIP guys on the ground in MDE, one thread was 71 pages long. Consensus is it's either a smart business move or a dumb one that will cause even less participation.

All the speculation and arguing about what's best for the board, profits and bandwidth is interesting, but why wouldn't an admin take 2 minutes out of their busy day to make a post on this topic that affects so many explaining their actions and settle things down? Their silence is deafening, "good work" my ass!

Not really; can't agree with you entirely, Paco - it a question of supporting something you are using, not to put too fine a point on it - what changes the board was some retiring, getting old, getting out of the hobby, not traveling to CR, discovering other places, whatever.

Wit asks:

Is CRT what is was in it's heyday? No. But is it still a valuable resource for information and travel discounts? That is a resounding YES

You have (in addition to the "Good old days" syndrome where by every thing past is remembered with fondness; I was a member and before that a reader of the board) - not every thread was golden, believe me

I seem to remember many in fact that degenerated into homosexual activity <not really, just on line>....I think    ) that would have made an 8th grader blush - and while some of the threads and posts were funny, much of the banter between you, the late Florida, and Spanky went down the 'ol hershey highway

Due to the fact its not the cheap paradise it once was - less old drunks retiring to CR than in years past - the guys of the "Irish Drifter" generation who retired to San Jose are fewer and fewer (along with the gringo bars catering to them - The Nashville, the NY Bar, JoeB's and Karens, and so on - they were supported by a demographic that does not exist in the numbers it did).

I'm a big believer in the old saying "This too shall pass" - I don't expect non VIP's to stop posting, and I predict they will not. And if they do, others will post in their stead.

The question is not "who owns the board" (although you are welcome to have any problems with the current Admin's you wish - and while I don't always agree with your views, I think you are sharp enough to make an educated guess on who does own CRT) but rather should those who are frequent posters be paid members. To me is a basic question of fairness - even if it not required, I think most know the right thing - or, conversely, do the opposite of what you are currently doing

In my view they certainly should.

It is also irritating and insulting to hear the reasons given for not financially supporting the board - and when you run out of reasons, regardless of how weak they are, just get all "chippy" and threaten to take your toys <your posts and knowledge in this case> and go away - my prediction......not likely.

well let me be the 1st & only guy to actually answer the original question "How much $$$ has your CRT membership saved you?"

I've been coming to sjo for 10 years & the discounts have saved me thousands of $. I stayed @ the Prez the 1st few years & got a discount there, recently I usually stay @ the Amistad where I get a 25% discount off my room rate for a 1 week stay. I've made 50 or so trips to sjo in the last 10 years so 25% off a $119 a night room adds up fast. I have also stayed at other gulch hotels with discounts-the SL, Dunn Inn, the old HLH etc. where I got varying discounts. Add in the many cocktails, bottles of rum, & meals I have bought @ the SL over the years with a 10% discount, I have saved a bundle. Add in the discount I've gotten on mp sessions, other restaurants, tours etc.-the total amount is incalculable.

Thank you CRT for saving me thousands of $ on food, booze, lodging, tours, & sex in my favorite vacation spot in the world!

Well, I'm not going to join the pissin contest but I will respond to the original intent of the thread.

I researched CR for about 2 months before deciding to make my 1st trip last March. I found CRT & joined for 2 reasons before making the trip. First, I found the information on the site extremely valuable & helped me to prepare for my 1st trip. Second, I thought the CRT discounts from sponsors would be nice as well.

I don't remember how much money the CRT discounts saved me on the previous 2 trips. I know it saved me some cash as LA, SL & Zona II. My 3rd trip last month I saved $90.00 just at the ML. I believe that's more than double the annual CRT membership fee so being a paid member is a wise decision from a monetary point of view.

For me the greatest value is the information received on the site which definitely shortens the CR learning curve. Plus, I have communicated by PM with several other paid members requesting advice or suggestions & received very helpful responses.

I will be renewing in February as a lifetime member since there is real value for me & I will be returning to CR on a regular basis. One more thing I have noticed on all 3 trips. The sponsors of CRT do take good care of CRT VIP card holders & to me that simply adds additional value to the paid membership.

For the yearly price it is well worth the membership just to help the site stay up and running. The map is worth 39usd.

I have saved over $3000.00 thanks to CRT but more importantly I feel there is tremendous value to belonging to CRT for those of us that are fed up the gringa attitudes. For this reason I know that I have gotten over 20 people to sign up for membership and most are lifetime members now. Four of them I met in the Denver airport waiting for the red eye flight to San Jose. Funny how you can guess who the mongers are in the airport. I think only 2 or three did the one year membership and then turned gay after mistakingly picking up a tranny in parque morazon, so they don't come back anymore. Actually one has passed away. For the record I do not have any ownership or am I friends with any of the owners of CRT. I

I saved thousands over the years that I have used CRT. Shoot, I save thousands yearly now and I don't monger any more. How, I get to relive all my past experiences for free. I get to see my old post and the memories come flooding back in. I get to remember old friends and catchup on what they are doing. That is priceless.

I disagree totally with the above critique of Admin. There is not a single statement, opinion or business plan or model that Admin could place before this group of individuals that would not be pounced upon by posters. Some will not like this. Some will not like that. Some will not like anything. We live in a very negative world where posting negative seems to be more important than posting accurate or fairly.

In my view, this is a worthy site and we should support it.

As always, just my opinion.

Have a Great Day,

Dave

I'm with Bro Dave all the way, especially what I have bolded. Also why take someone seriously who doesn't have skin in the game? Haven't heard a reason yet that makes a lick of sense, about not being a VIP. The money I've saved? Being a very casual visitor, maybe not so much. The camaraderie and ability to post anywhere here? Priceless.
