Wow. This is indeed very sad news.

I was one of the few that had the honor of knowing John (personally) for the past several years and I had a great relationship with him.
I met him at the Sportsmens Lodge in 2005. After introductions and some small talk, I was simply amazed at his knowledge about the city of San Jose and the country of Costa Rica, especially since he had only lived there for about 2 or 3 years at that time. We ended up talking for the better part of 2 hours, about a myriad of different topics, i.e. Latin America, College & Professional Sports, World Politics, Medicine, Finance, Travel, etc. It was one of those "moments" that stand out in my mind.
We had talked before that day (on the board and also via PM's and e-mails) and I already knew about his "board presence". But he had never said a cross word to me (or about me), and I had nothing but respect for the man. I'd like to think the feeling was mutual, and after our 1st meeting, that feeling was simply reinforced.
John was a straight shooter, a no bullshit kind of guy. He was extremely intelligent about numerous subjects, and when he spoke, he knew exactly what he was talking about. But he also knew when someone was talking shit, and he certainly didn't have a problem calling them out on it! I knew this, and I never had any desire to have a battle of wits with him. He knew me and I knew him. And because of this, we both knew I'd lose, and lose in a big way. But I think that others (who did not know him personally) would try to push the envelope with him, only to finally realize that - while he may have seemed like a cranky, cantankerous old man on the outside, he STILL knew exactly what he was talking about, and he could always back it up with facts from well known sources.
Back in those days, I was in the process of building condo's on the Pacific Coast of Guanacaste, as well as starting a new fishing & day-tours company in Playa Flamingo. And he helped me on numerous occasions with some of the legal and logistical problems that I was encountering along the way. He also gave me the name of his local attorney in SJO, who I still use to this day. It is now 8 years later, and my business in Guanacaste is still plugging along and making a nominal monthly profit. And some of that success I owe to John, because of the solid foundation that he helped me build. Whenever I had a "serious" question on just about "anything Costa Rica", he was always the first person that I'd contact, and he was usually able to either give me the information that I needed, and if not - he'd steer me in the right direction.
Rest in peace old friend, and know that you will be missed. I will not soon forget all of our "behind the scenes" conversations and correspondence. I'm happy that you are no longer in pain and I know that you are in a better place now. Take care amigo.
With Much Respect,
Your Friend Mike B.
