Don't see the problem, its not legal to drink in the streets in many or most cities in the US. Why does anyone have to drink in the streets anyway. Seems like a reasonable law.

leave it or finish it. not too hard. then again i don't recall seeing many people openly drinking on the streets of san jose.

I hear ya Painter. Let's see what they do during the topes, Festival de Luces and when they have the parties during the holidays. Actually, they probably will enforce it because the more smokers, drinkers and other minor lawbreakers they have to police means less real crimes they have to respond to. haha

I believe that article 9 can be interpreted to read prohibits the consumption of alcoholic beverages in public places, except during civic festivals. It is very difficult to get the finer points of anything but especially legal documents using an online translator. But there is always a problem of groups of young males who cause disturbances at these types of events so perhaps this is a tool for police to help solve that. Selective enforcement is possible. Time will tell

What's the big deal?

You can't drink on the street anywhere in the US, other than some street fairs, etc. Why would you expect CR to be any different?

It really seems that this is targeting gringos in that the fine is so outrageously high by tico salaries and still ridiculous for gringos. That would be at least almost the equivalent of four sessions even if you are in the "cien" club. Jeeze even in the land of too many idiot laws, you are able to carry a plastic cup in New Orleans, Tahoe and Las Vegas, among others, unless I am out of date with my info.

Barrio La California is all younger people drinking on the street and the plaza de la democracia regularly has people hanging out and drinking all the time as well. Outside of every bar younger people hang out at there are people drinking. This is definitely not targeting gringos.

No, sir you have a prudent wariness and healthy skepticism. They just didn't play out that way this time...but then the story's hardly over...

I was not aware of the law . I just returned Monday from a weeks visit and walked across the street from the Horseshoe to the DR with a drink and also from the DR to KL. I will not be doing that in the future .

Maybe b/c they are 2 very different places, with different language, heritage, and culuture :) - that said, agree with you 100% as to what is the big deal - christs sake, I can't think of why one would have to carry and/or drink on the street

Well Scuba, what if you were smoking one of your La Glorias and wanted to wash the taste out of your mouth. Or maybe just finished a session on 6th st and didn't like the aftertaste of 2 week old carp. Can any other brother give Scuba examples. There must be hundreds.
Missed you, get your ass back to SJO

Neither place invented licentious public debauchery (my fave kind) but both put a high polish on the concept.
