As a few have noted, with and for this law. Good basic libertarian ethics- your rights stop where mine begin....

And, for what it is worth....

Article from the Journal of the American Medical Association on the improvement of bartender lung functioning after Boston's Smoking ban..

http://jama.ama-assn.org/content/280/22/1909.short

Same journal- conclusion of this study, smoking ban did not harm tourism..

http://jama.ama-assn.org/content/281/20/1911.short

Same results in Mass..

http://www.tobaccoscam.ucsf.edu/pdf/9.2 ... 9JPHMP.pdf

Another study, same conclusion..

http://www.worksafebc.com/regulation_an ... 10060h.pdf

These all are, btw, well cited studies published in top journals, each with outstanding research methodologies. A quick review of the scholarly literature show most studies show improved tourism for regions with smoking bans, although bars without resteruants that failed to adapt to the rules did show some signs, in two studies I noted, of loosing business (those that worked to aclimate to the changes seemed to recover just fine)

Why don't you do yourself a real favor and grow a set of nads and quit smoking? That way you can still come to Costa Rica , you will be breathing better and probably have longer more enjoyable sessions.

As a Non-smoker I am against the smoking ban in bars. Once they start with the USA rules, smoking ban, girls, etc., etc, many of us will be saying adios to Costa Rica. :(

As a nonsmoker, I love the smoking bans. For the smokers....I mean how hard is it to step outside and light up there instead of slowly killing everyone else who wants to enjoy the night life? For the me the biggest negative of going to CR is all the damn smoke in the places that I like to hang out. It kills my lungs. This is a win win actually. The smokers still have the option of smoking by simply walking outside and the nonsmokers don't have to have their health damaged by a habit they despise.

I look at the new law, as this, CR was under pressure to comform to this law, as part of some deal that they signed years ago.... and you can bet there is money behind it somewhere???

Costa Rica is going to put on a big show for the world and the forget about the whole thing.... or at least the fines  ... Remember the traffic cams :D

I also see it as a loss of fredom in CR ... why I like it there?

I also understand the non-smoking publics rights

I also have good info that some of our favorite places to visit are working on a plan to make everyone happy

Yea smoking sucks but some of us a hooked

Working on quiting myself.. so a semi smoke free San Jose would help

Smoke if you gottem.... bum one if you don't

I'm neutral on the smoking bans. I no longer smoke so they don't make a big difference to me. But I do feel they will have some negative impacts on the bars. I despise cigarette smoke but have never really been bothered by it in Costa Rica, most of the places I visit don't seem to have many issues with heavy smoke. But quitting is one of the best things anyone could do for them self. I smoked heavily for several years and gave it up cold turkey and have never looked back. It was extremely hard but not impossible to do.

I was smoking nearly 2 packs a day when I quit 9 yrs ago. Best thing I ever did. Not only do I feel better, but I have more $ to spend on chicas.

Circus,

I know you meant well, but this is another example of how a newbie who has been asked to change his handle (and refuses) can be mistaken as a LONG time brother...

That post you reference above was made by vegaN Bob, not VegaS Bob our long time amigo.

I know how easy it is to make a mistake like that as you are not the first, but you may want to take you opinion to the real infractor.

Best amigo
El S

Hi
First off why don't you use your real handle and sorry but you really come off as an ass and i think you are doing this on purpose same with copying a respected members name, I usually don't say mean things but boy you are a punk! 2nd you non smokers some at least are a hateful group. I quit cigs about four years ago and don't like them either but still smoke cigars standing outside for a hour or two is not gonna happen I am just going to grab a girl not spend a nickle a go to a place I can smoke, even if it means an apartment.

For those of you who don't understand cigars we enjoy them in the same way some of you savor a twenty year bottle of your favorite drink.

I still don't understand why the business can't decide what to do I felt this way in the states as well, many air handlers today are so efficient you non smokers would have to act gay to get close enough to me to smell shit.

I might add except for dining out I still do not spend money in non smoking business's man I have saved a ton but have also seen a lot of old time bars go under kinda sad.

I am not sure what to do I retire Friday and if I am alive wanted to come explore, I may very well just bypass SJ and rent a house at the beach with a big balcony for smoking my cigars and call girls to visit for a day or two at a time. Any non haters would of course be welcome to come hang even non smokers if you don't mind me smoking outside on a balcony or at the poolside.

I see a lot of happy non smokers but think you are underestimating how many smokers there are, in our group as a whole there are a lot of smokers.

I hope it doesn't hurt the good guy's like Bill and Boyd.

Well we'll see what happens but since my cigar collection could be traded for a new BMW you might sense I am a pretty serious cigar smoker. I travel with smoking as part of my trips.

Good Luck everyone.
