As the originator of this post, I cannot thank you guys enough for this education and excellent debate.

For background, I am US citizen who will be working quite a bit in Alberta in the near future and was thinking I could sneak a Columbian amiga residing in SJO to Calgary for a visit.

Not so fast my friend.....

Very interesting input....looks like the only chance would be to fly AC to YYZ and then cris-cross the country to YYC...the time and effort not worth it....

Any other ideas welcome...thanks again for all the informative input from all...

Canadian girls are nicer than gringas so you might not have to import. :D

I agree. I worked with a lot of Canadian women in Taiwan. Very nice, intelligent and lovely ladies. Same for the Australian and NZ ladies. None of them are as useless, bitchy and whiny as the good old USA gringas. No need to import, imho.

On the subject of flights, it's far easier than going through Spain, the DR or Cuba. I've taken Taca flights from Toronto that connect in El Salvador, I'm guessing no visa is required for a Latina to transit through SAL. To enter Canada however, she'll require a tourist visa at least. I know a chica who I met in the Del Rey who came to Toronto last year to work. Apparently, she's still trying to get back permanently.

BTW, Canadian girls may be nicer, but not in Toronto.

It's easier to get them to Canada , but there is a problem; finding a flight to Canada that doesn't go through the US. She won't be able to layover in the US without a valid US Visa. I think one option is to fly Iberia from SJO to Madrid, then somehow get to Canada from Spain (avoiding the US). It'll cost you though.

If you are a Canadian-You can also fly from SJO to the DR then Cuba then Toronto. Cheaper than flying to phucking spain

Why bother going to the DR? There are direct flights to Cuba from SJO. None of that is relevent to this thread however. The question posed is obtaining a visa for a non Canadian.

ID that I did not know  8)

To extend Brother DiegoC's remark just a bit:
http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/12/02 ... tion-laws/
It is not codified yet as legal but as in Costa Rica, not illegal--a legal nicety to be sure. Be interesting to see what happens in Canada in 2011.

I have had Crown barristers (Canadian lawyers) try to explain the difference between being “legal” and being “not illegal.”

Apparently there is no law prohibiting prost*tuion per se (on the face of it) but there are laws prohibiting other acts associated with prostitution such as pimping and pandering or, here is a big one, negotiating for said act in a public place.

Included are prohibitions against negotiating in a place where prostitution activities occur. That stops the proliferation of what we would call a wh*re house. They call it a common bawdy house.

You’re right Jazzbo, the Canadian law really is complicated. So being “not illegal” is probably more accurate than saying it is “legal.”
