I'm not trying to be funny, but if I wear shorts and flip flops but have my passport copy, have a very pleasant and respectful attitude, speak Spanish, do not associate with minors, don't posses drugs and am not falling down drunk, can I expect to be okay in one of these raids? :?:

It is your right to wear what you want! But it is also their right (and it is their country) to not like seeing you disrespecting THEIR customs in THEIR COUNTRY!! Reread my previous post! I am not saying you will be harrassed or even have a problem because of your dress, but,you will be more likely to have a problem. I just do not understand gringos obsession with the dress issue! Would you wear shorts in the states in a place where they are not acceptable?? NO!! well then why would do it here where it is not acceptable???????? Yeah you are on vacation!, yeah, you want to be comfortable, yeah, yeah, yeah!! But why be disrespectful of others when you know it may cause YOU a problem????? I live here, am here almost everyday of the year, and in San Jose it is NEVER so hot that long pants are uncomfortable. When you rub your lack of respect for their customs in their face, do not complain when or if they do not treat you with respect!!!!!!!!! But by all means wear whatever you want!!!!

And as for flip-flops on the street here; I just can not imagine ever doing that if for no other reason, MY OWN SAFTY! With all the trash, filth, and cracked, broken, uneven sidewalks here, no way would I ever wear them here. In my opinion it is a very dangerous thing to do!!!! Certainly not the best shoe to wear when walking anywhere, and for sure not in San Jose!

It's a comfort issue. I don't wear flip flops on the street, but in the SL I will. As for pants, I know it's not that hot there, but shorts are so much more comfortable. I might try wearing pants, just to see how they feel.

Great feedback BB57. I could not have said it better. We all know guys that have lived here for years and do not speak ANY Spanish ! and they ALL think that they are getting by just fine

I have tried to tell this to many of them. IMHO it is not how much Spanish you know but the fact that you are making an honest effort. That, and some real effort at proper pronunciation, and they would all be doing so much better. My favorite is when a certain CRT'r starts in on one of his long stories and all the chicas are looking at each other like...mmmm....what an @@%%#! JMHO

in the majority of cases here where a gringo has had a problem with the police here, he has been dressed in shorts, loud shirt, and flipflops; often drunk, frequently loud and obnoxious, and in many cases he has been a 60 something fat guy arm in arm with a 20 year old chica! That picture would grab anyone's attention and in many cases distrust and dislike!!! think about it!!!!

AYYYYYY!!!! QUE ASCO!!!!! :( :( :(

I've even seen gringos pushing 70!!! (like 67 -68 for example) nuzzling with these young chicas!
What an eyesore!   :P :P :P  :!:

Time to stop being so paranoid every time a known gringo hangout gets raided. When you are looking for illegal prostitutes one of the places you look is where gringos will be. Just have your documents and everything will be over in a few minutes and you can get back to having pleasure with those ladies who have the proper documents to be in Costa Rica.

If you have the slightest doubt just say no thanks and move on. There are no guarantees you have to use your own best judgement. How do you know the ID of a chica in the states is real?

You can wear whatever you want. If you have your documents in order, and aren't breaking any laws, you will be ok. The cops couldn't care any less how you dress.

I'm not with the idea of pants=respect. My Costa Rican mother-in-law told me that Ticos don't wear shorts in the city. Gringos aren't expected to abide by these customs. But if anybody is worried about disrespecting Ticos, our attitude can disrespect people a whole lot more than anything we wear. The "ugly American" in his loud, obnoxious, belligerent, and offensive manner will rub people the wrong a lot more than you and your shorts.

I've been 3 times before and always wore shorts, but also always spoke Spanish and used palabras como "por favor" y "gracias". Also, I would think just being in the DR would be disrespectful to the culture. Dirty American coming to buy sex from our sweet ticas...
Anyway, I might try wearing pants just to see if I notice a difference. 8)

We should take a realistic look at the raids.

1) They are about every three months

2) They are looking for immigration violations, drugs and und***ge girls

3) Not one single CRT member has been taken away (even one without papers)

4) None of our regular places are being closed down

They amount to good PR for the Administration at the moment and for us if you are unlucky enough to be there when it happens a minor inconvenience.

As to clothing, at the SL and DR where whatever you want it is all gringos for the most part. On the street shorts, sandals and loud shirts stand out and make you be noticed more. Generally, this is not a good thing.

BK is right about this. I will even go farther saying I think their actions support our cause and legitimize the industry helping keep it clean. If it can be kept clean maybe it will last for a long time.

They consider shorts as proper for exercise, the beach and little boys. Generationally this is changing and you see lots of younger men wearing shorts.

It has been a long time but as I remember it the reason Easy got hauled away was because he pissed the cops off going to the aid of a chica not because of any irregularities in his documents. But it has been quite awhile so perhaps there is more to the story then I remember.

I know the conventional wisdom is to carry a copy. I'm not in the city alot but was there a couple of weeks ago. I didn't even want to deal with the possibility of any hassle and just carried my passport with me. Kept it good and secure.
