My bag got stolen at the Sportsmans last trip - my fault as I got super drunk and left it in the bar before staggering back to my room. And like an idiot, I still had my passport in there, it was my first night and I forgot to stow it in the safe.

But, I was amazed at how quick I got a replacement. Went to the embassy and within about 90 minutes I had an emergency replacement! First time I've ever been impressed with the US government.

BangBang, Irish, thanks for the answers.

I have made an appointment at my nearest regional passport center.

If you are a US citizen you do not have to wait in the long lines in front of the Embassy. Without a US passport or a copy not sure how you would prove that.

Once inside it was red chairs for citizens and blue chairs for all others. Or it was blue chairs for citizens and red for others. Not to worry they will splain it to you when you are in.

Bring a police report of the theft. It will expedite the process. They make you raise your right hand a swear an oath from the weak side of a double paned bullet proof glass window.

Pay the price and you are a made in The USA Citizen yet again.

process time = 1/2 day
payment for new passport = $100 +/-
having a US passport = priceless

Also, you may want to look into getting one of the new "Passport Cards", these are used for border crossings by land in the US, but they can help to expedite your identification at the embassy. Just make sure you don't keep it with your regular passport ;)

DildoMan, you are smart to get a new passport. With a passport which is that close to expiring the airline in the United States probably will not let you on the plane. It happened to one of my K*ds.

The ticket was bought and paid for but her U.S. passport was set to expire in one month. Even though it was valid for another month the airline refused boarding.

We showed my daughter’s Costa Rican Cedula which the airline accepted. It was explained to me that the airline wants to know if they send you to a destination the host/destination country will allow you to stay at the destination.

If a passenger gets to a destination country and the destination country will not allow the passenger entry then the airline has to fly you back to the country of origin at the airline's expense.

The airline allowed my daughter to board because she is a citizen of CR and she was going to CR. The airline knew that CR would allow entry based on the Cedula. She is also a US citizen but the driving factor was her CR citizenship.
