Thanks Cujo for explaining that regarding posting behind a second made up name.
We obviously have a lot of voting to go before this is decided but one small point the number of views doesn't mean everyone didn't vote as someone may go back and view to see the results or to add a post to the thread its counted as an additional view. I for one have been here 10 times already today.

NO.

Some members have proven they cannot use any restraint (or courtesy) on political matters

I think it would be kinda like peeling a scab. It feels good while your doing it but does not serve any purpose.

I think the main purpose of this board serves to share and inform each other about the benefits and perils of traveling to CR. And we should keep our aim in that direction. Regardless if that %$#@ is a leftest or a rightest or a _____est.

We see how heated this board can become just discussing something as simple as 'tipping'.

If several people get into a big discussion in the Political Section, it will be in the back of the mind when they are in other sections or meet in person. These are big issues that people at least perceive as affecting their lives.

Absolutely NO for me.

I have good friends who have diametrically opposed political views from mine. We keep it that way by a tacit agreement to keep our friendship focused on the things we agree on. There are a few with whom I will have heated political discussions; but it requires a certain level of openness and tolerance on both sides, something that really can't exist on a board like CRT.

Speaking for myself, unless the political issue very directly affects our hobby, it shouldn't occur here. That includes CR politics.

Admin, you are to be complemented for keeping the board pretty much free of this sort of thing. I'd encourage you to quickly lock down threads that get political.

IMHO, the last thing this board needs is another excuse for out of control, contentious behavior among the membership. There are already plenty of political blogs on the Internet that serve this purpose.

I voted no because no good will come of it. Political discussions will lead to harsh words and harsh discussions which will lead to discourse. I came here to talk about the good life of mongering abroad- mainly CR, but I enjoy hearing about other destinations as well. But having been a member of other single-topic dedicated boards, I can tell you from experience - bad blood from the Politics section of those boards boils over. Then the hot boiling point eventually carries over into other threads and forums.

I don't want to see pissing matches get started over politics then bleed into every forum on this site. And from what I have seen, that is what happens.

I think the less rules the better, so any subject should be allowed, and if noone is interested the string will end fast enough.

You might find this an odd stance from a persistent violator like I have been, but I voted NO for the reasons some Brothers have stated--the lack of genuine containment of subject matter and the very real threat of broken friendships over matters that in the long-run are out of our control and/or don't mean dookie. Even purely economic or historical Threads/discussions/hijackings have quickly spiraled out of control--and this with the knowledge that those are tightly moderated Threads. Try reading Craigslist's "Rants & Raves" for the unmoderated variety. Yes, you can skip such discussions but many won't out of horrified fascination--and others might get dragged in if somebody name-checks them as, for example, the Anti-Christ. Again, NO.
This is my prime source of intellection and would surely hate to see it irrevocably damaged.

I come to this site frequently to escape to 1 of my favorite vacation locales; a mental escape when I can't physically be in CR. I want to hear about girls, new & old mongering locales, side trips, dining etc. When I read these passages I picture myself in CR enjoying it all vicariously thru my fellow board members. When discussions of health care, immigration reform, dems vs. reps etc. surface the vacation imagery has burst & the real-life problems & issues we encounter in our everday lives come to mind. I come to this site to escape those problems & issues, if just for an hour or so. I log-on to learn & share thoughts of CR TICAS, therefore I vote a resounding no!

I would rather have a forumn on how we can improve our Spanish speaking abilities by learning and teaching each other spanish therefore elevating the cultural experince of our hobby.

Maybe called something like: Spanish for gringos who want to learn spanish!

On further reflection I believe a political forum could be fatally divisive, and cause a breakdown in CRT civility.
The limbaugh thread provoked multiple threats ("I'm gonna get you" eMails) and we saw the absolute worst characteristics of some brothers.

So my second opinion (same as first, but stronger):
NO

This would be a positive and useful addition to the board.

Express your political leanings at the ballot box, or by writing your state or local Senator/Congressman, or create your own political blog to blow off steam, this forum was not created for debating things "political" and has nothing to do with Costa Rica or mongering in general. Two thumbs down.
