I read the same article in today's Inside Cost Rica. I am so glad that they did not mention the MPs, SL, or anything else close to my cache! Last years handicap access publicity did not help much right before Labor Day.

If the more scholarly amongst us wish to read Professor Schifter's book Mongers in Heaven --great title and so apt--it's available on Amazon.com for about $22 + S/H. I say "scholarly" because it's a university press book focusing on sexual tourism and HIV risk in CR AND the US. As to his comment about escaping reality--isn't that the purpose of any vacation? I work with some people who are serious cruise addicts--and they have the extra weight to prove it. What's the essential difference between them and us? Zero, is my guess.
Most def' agree with the comments that this is bad news, inauspicious timing and possibly part of some new campaign. If they want to focus on the illegal trafficking, I'm OK with that but reporting on folks doing legal consensual business is just, even in this mild form, moralistic sensationalizing. Some of the Colombianas may be in some sort of indenture situation to pay off debts but otherwise otherwise none of this whole thing is illegal (the MPs are at least marginally legal).

One problem with his pieces is that it portrays all of the pros as unfortunates who would do something else if they could. In my view, there are many who have been fired from real jobs, choose to sleep half the day, only go to work when they want or when the money runs out and often enjoy the glamor of the attention and the ability to dress and look sexy, which they couldn't do so well on a normal salary in CR. The point is that some of them like what they do and put up with an hour of sex with a stranger for the other advantages. Also, of course, some of them like the sex as well. They aren't all unfortunates; some of them want to do this! So what's the problem? I only want to help...Can't wait 'til the next opportunity.

Happened past the headquarters of the National Liberation Party ( party of Oscar & Laura in la Sabana and the parking lot was loaded with cars. Could be just coincidence that this occurred the same day that the Miami Herald and Inside Costa Rica carried the article on sex tourism in Costa Rica.

Maybe they were just gathering to watch the futball match although I passed by two hours before the match started..

Anything is possible, but this really seems like paranoid thinking to me.

The more likely explanations are much more mundane. Chinchilla announced her two vice-presidential running mates yesterday. It seems pretty reasonable for them to hold a campaign strategy meeting. They could also be doing some damage control discussions for a brewing mini-scandal involving a Liberation Deputy recently misusing a government owned plane for political purposes. And then watching the game-which Costa Rica sadly lost 1-0.

I have a couple of issues with the story...

20,000 putas and 60,000 mongers?
Now I'm pretty sure that all 60K of us are not in town all of the time at the same time. If that ratio were correct then there are sure to be plenty of desperate hookers in CR. Lets say that 5000 of us are in town at one time (still a very high number I think). That makes four girls for every boy. A bunch of girls are going home alone tonight! Unless you factor in the Ticos. I suppose that if you factor in a couple hundred thou of them then the numbers would add up. But, of course, there is no mention of the indigenous mongers. Only the sex tourist.

"Prostitution is legal and regulated". Neither is true. Prostitution is not illegal. I has not been legislated as being legal. And in no way is it regulated! Unless you consider the law against pimping as regulation.

That is probably because CRT is a pretty small part of the whole scene.

I am going to bring the article with me, and tell the chicas that they should be thankful for $30/hr.

Why do they always pick one who has a sad story to tell and hates doing it?
And the whole focus is on that one as if she is typical. I know serveral that enjoy it and have positive stories to tell.
