Your GDP comparison is only on metric in a very complicated set of macroeconomic equations. You have to factor in living standards and other factors. Ticos spend a lot more on cars as a percent of their avg income than we do in the US. Cars are actually more expensive here. The GDP number is a measure of relative productivity. You would need a relative CPI among other things to cpmplete your analysis.
