VB, only $150? I just got back from a 8-day stay and a tica wanted $400 TLN. A very petite colombiana, in the 6-7 range, $250 for a TLN. WTF were they smoking. This is on a Tuesday 8-9PM with a chica to gringo ratio of 5/1 and most of the gringos were not buying. They did not get my money and I saw them again trying to hustle the next night. I hope they went hungry.

BangBang57 hit it right on, the chicas believe all gringos are rich, particularly if you live in Escuzu.

VB you were too polite, just getting up and walking away, I would have asked "ustes es loco" "go back to Columbia."And few other choise words.

I guess I'm getting grumpy in my old age, my tolerence for BS is lower.

I've been there 7 times and never experienced that issue. Usually it's cien. During the day I say I only pay 50 b/c its during the day and at night I usually get to 70. However, I'll be there in a week and a half and I think I'll try a new strategy. I'll just tell them what I'll pay ($50/$70) and not ask them what it cost. How do you think that will go over?

I don’t understand why some guys pay so much at El Rey. I started going to CR in 1997 and I have never paid $100. I used to go to El Rey a lot more in the late 90’s and early 00’ and it was then my major hunting ground. Now, it is mainly a place to warm up, have a cold beer, and joke a little with the ladies (I still feel my trip is not complete if I don’t go to El Rey). Many have turned me down (when I offer $50, maybe $70 if it is a ‘diva’), and I simply prefer to go somewhere else if I don’t see anything that I like. In my humble opinion, you have a better chance if you only consider those girls that show some interest in you. Those girls that make eye contact, approach you, and flirt with you, etc. If a girl doesn’t acknowledge your presence, forget about her, no matter how beautiful she is (unless you are willing to spend $100 or $150). I understand many will not agree, and it works for me. Just my 2 cents.

You know, guys walk around the DR and sometimes see a mediocre chica he feels he can get for $60 (because she isn't as hot as the others) and I agree with this type of thinking.

But the reverse of that applies as well. When a chica sizes you up, she knows within seconds what she thinks you'll pay. It doesn't surprise me one bit... :|

The complete name of the hotel is “Del Rey”. The word “del” is really a contraction form derived from the combination of preposition “de” (in English means “of”) and the definite article “el” (In English means “the”).

de+el = del

The translation of “Hotel Del Rey” into English is “Hotel of the King”. When I use “El Rey” alone, and not “DR” (as most people call it on the board), am shortening the name. I also noticed many Ticas refer to the place that way.

I hope this explanation helps.

Many of the girls euphemistically refer to it simply as "el hotel"

Panadero,

1) I'm sure Rainman, and most everyone else here, figured out what you meant by "El Rey" (note: all the smileys he included in his post). I think that most everyone here that speaks any spanish at all already understood about how the "de" & "el" contraction works. I believe he was just poking fun at the AFFECTED way you were referring to the place.

2) I wouldn't necessarily use these chicas as paradigms on how to speak proper spanish.

3) While SOME of the locals may be referring to the place as "El Rey" rather than the way it is more commonly referred to by virtually ALL the guests that stay there, that DOESN'T make "Del Rey" somehow incorrect. After all, that IS the name that appears on the building, website and all its marketing materials and so would seem AT LEAST equally valid.

4) Since you're talking to "most people on the board" here rather than to the chicas wouldn't it make more sense to use the term actually used by THEM? By your acknowledgment the "DR" is what "most people call it on the board".

5) If you're trying to shorten the name, when spoken "Del Rey" and "El Rey" are equally long (2 syllables). When written (as was done here) "DR" (or would that be "ER"? :P) is even shorter than "El Rey", so why wouldn't you use that?

Personally, when communicating with other international mongers on-line, I prefer to use the abbreviations "HDR" or "HDR/BM" (or better yet just "BM" since few of us actually stay at the hotel). I'm ABSOLUTELY certain that NONE of the local chicas use any of those terms, but I'm NOT trying to communicate with THEM. I realize that not many mongers use "HDR" either, but I'm sure all of them can easily figure it out. The reason I prefer "HDR" to the slightly shorter and much more common "DR" is to distinguish it from the "DR" for Dominican Republic which also comes up fairly often on this and other mongering boards.

Prolijo,

*I am sorry I didn’t catch that the post was meant as a joke. It’s my fault, and I was trying to help and explain the use of “El Rey”. I apologize if I offended anyone.

2) I wouldn't necessarily use these chicas as paradigms on how to speak proper spanish.

*I don’t understand what you mean, and I think you missed the point. I am not trying to explain how to speak proper Spanish. I thought the previous post wanted to know why I used “El Rey” and I gave a grammatical explanation. Had I know it was a joke, I never would have replied. (because my explanation would be unnecessary)

*I agree with you, and I never said, “Del Rey “is incorrect.

4) Since you're talking to "most people on the board" here rather than to the chicas wouldn't it make more sense to use the term actually used by THEM? By your acknowledgment the "DR" is what "most people call it on the board".

*You are right. I should have said “Del Rey”, but I wrote too quickly and it just the way it came out.

5) If you're trying to shorten the name, when spoken "Del Rey" and "El Rey" are equally long (2 syllables). When written (as was done here) "DR" (or would that be "ER"? ) is even shorter than "El Rey", so why wouldn't you use that?

*The practice of saying the abbreviations of places, DR, HR, DR, etc, is a lot more common in the US and less common in Latin America. Besides, if you spell “ER” in Spanish, the sound will be longer than it will be in English.

The reason I prefer "HDR" to the slightly shorter and much more common "DR" is to distinguish it from the "DR" for Dominican Republic which also comes up fairly often on this and other mongering boards.

* I respect your preferences in communicating. Again, I apologize again if in any way I offended you or anyone.

Damn guys !

Im sorry that my usual smartass antics resulted in such a big discussion.
Next time either of you or in CR (Costa Rica) at the same time as myself I owe you a drink. Maybe we can even have it in in the El Rey aka; BM, HDR or La Officina

Panadero, no worries amigo, no offense taken by me!

Rainman3,

The misunderstanding is my fault. I should have been paying more attention.

I hope one day we can have a drink at BM or HDR!

Gracias amigo,

To roil the waters further, there's a problem with calling or thinking of the HDR as La Oficina--that's the name of a short-timers motel. See this link for directions (Brother Irish Drifters post):
