Some of the women in the PI could walk into the DR and you would think they were Ticas. It's because of their Spanish bloodlines. (More common in Manila than in AC.)
PI used to be a Spanish colony before it was an American colony, and many of the words in their native Tagalog language are derived from Spanish but often spelled differently or have different meanings. For example the words "porkay" (Tagalog) and "por que" (Spanish) both have the same pronunciation and mean the same thing. "Guapo" (Spanish) and "gwapo" (Tagalog) mean the same thing.
One word that really throws me at times is the word "derecho" which in Tagalog means "straight ahead", not "right" as it does in Spanish. I kept shouting "Derecho! Derecho!" to a poor taxi driver one time, but he wouldn't turn right and kept going straight ahead!

He looked at me with a look as if to say "I am going straight, Dumbass!"
