I was in the middle of responding to EdB's first post on this thread when the power went out. Just now back.

Sirens continuously since the event. Very rocky here one the fourth floor; had to catch one of the 42" plasmas that was headed for the floor. Everything in the cupboards rattling. I was on the phone to a friend in the US when it hit. He could hear it over the phone! Pretty good one.

Under the heading "Missed it by that much": The building is being painted and the Tico crew has been working six floors up on the most rickety tinker-toy scaffolding you can imagine. Of course, they are using no safety gear and have tied this 1000lb monster to the building using 1/4" cotton clothesline. At the time of the quake they were dismantling the scaffolding for a move. Half an hour earlier and I would have had splattered Ticos all over the yard.

Muy Tico: What are they doing now? Right back up on the scaffolding with no safety gear. At least they are crossing themselves and kissing crucifixes before mounting! I guess Catholicism can save a lot of money of safety equipment and insurance!

Special Bulletin issued by AM Costa Rica. Evidently there were injuries and building damage in Alajuela.

Country jolted by major quake
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
(2:05 p.m.)
A 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit north of the Central Valley this afternoon at 1:21 p.m. and set streets and buildings in motion. There were injuries.

The quake endured for at least 20 seconds and was followed by a number of aftershocks, some of which were felt. The shocks continued past 2 p.m.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was 35 kilometers (22 miles) northwest of San José. the exact estimated coordinates were 10.22 degrees north and 84.28 degrees west, said the survey. The event was estimated to be 28 kilometers (about 17 miles) deep.

The Cruz Roja in Alajuela said there were injuries in that province and that some buildings had suffered damage. The epicenter appeared to be in east central part of the province north of the city of the same name.

The quake followed a 4.6 mid-morning quake off the coast of Nicaragua and one Wednesday near the
Poás volcano. The quake today also was said to be near the volcano.

The afternoon quake was felt all over Costa Rica. The Arenal automatic earthquake showed that the quake lasted an incredible six minutes there. Many other automatic stations were off line when the quake hit.

Both major television stations interrupted regular programming with bulletins, but information was a long time in coming.

A reporter said that a street in northeast San José visibly cupped and rocked back and forth for the duration of the quake. Elsewhere, occupants poured out of office buildings. There were some reports of falling objects and cracks in buildings, but Fuerza Pública officers said they had had no calls in the San José area.

A Desamparados resident south of San José said the floor of her home cracked and that the concrete sink used for washing clothes in a neighbor's home collapsed.

Costa Rica has declared a country wide "red" state of emergency! It is 3:12 pm here and I just felt another after shook.

Many busines are closed and the streets are full of people. I was in Guadalupe eating lunch when the big one hit-talk about a resturanant empting in a hurry. Hypermas, MasXMenos, Pali and almost everything else in the area closed.

Have seen no signs of any panic; in fact everyone seems suprisingly calm; concerned but calm! There are a lot of traffic jams and buses are full at a time of day when they are usually almost empty. Business are closing early and people are ancious to get home to check on things. Church bells are all ringing and police are directing traffic in a lot of intersections where the lights are out. But otherwise it is just like a normal day here.

Just now saw this on Ch 7 TV. Two ninas ages 7 and 9 in San Isidro de Alajuela. Earth slide on to houses, but the ninas were outside and were buried by the slide.

The epicenter appeared to be in east central part of the province north of the city of the same name. The Ch*ld died in Poás de Alajuela, according to the Cruz Roja. The cause was a quake-provoked landslide, they said.

There were no details on the reported death of a man, although that is believed to have happened in the same general area.

The national emergency commission declared a red alert in the four central provinces of San José, Heredia, Alajeula and Cartago.

Many workers declined to reenter their workplaces for fear of more damage from aftershocks. An attitude of carnival developed in some areas. Several structures, including Hospital México in San José and Centro Colón in the downtown are believed to have suffered damage to the upper floors.

A crack appeared in the exterior walls of an office building downtown occupied by the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad.

A Desamparados resident south of San José said the floor of her home cracked and that the concrete sink used for washing clothes in a neighbor's home collapsed.
