I see your point Ciao at the sametime I'm sure Josie didn't mean it in that way.

I think above all else when concerning these issues or what escapes me is; regardless of how much spanish you know, act in the same way you would if the girl was english speaking.

So many guys change or "act different" when trying to speak spanish or otherwise convey a point. Certainly most can understand asking things in such a pointed or rehearsed manner comes across (to the chica) in many different ways.

None of which is immediately attractive to the chica. In short, act the same way here with the chicas as you do with the girls back home.

Good points Cujo, and I think you're right about J0sie's intention (Sorry J0sie). I had also thought that even if one's knowledge of Spanish is limited, but he is a gentleman at heart, then he would come across that way to a chica. Just not as articulately as you and J0sie. On the other hand, if a guy is an unrepentant prick, no amount of English or Spanish will disguise that.

I'm a beginners beginner, I can do alright in person because her English is way better than my Spanish, but for some reason the online translators make things worse. I got my deal made and the beach date set now to just pick the damn hotel.

Thanks for all the tricks guy's!

This post reminds me of my recent trip when there were many people in my room smokin' and jokin' one of which was Johana..

She knows a decent amount of english so for the most part we would speak spanglish to each other. Well since there were plenty of laughs that night, I got to hear her laugh.

Anyone who has been around her laugh can attest that it's a bit loud/obnoxious  . Well through the night I would mock her laugh (in a playful way) just to mess with her and she says (in english) "oh my laugh, I know it's real popular"

Afterwards I asked her if she meant that a lot of people "like it", she said yes. I told her a better word to use would be "likeable".

Now for you english first speakers out there, was I correct?

Wouldn't popular more so mean that a lot of people recognize it or that many people laugh that way?

If so, this is an example of how not to get caught in the trap of saying word for word in spanish what you mean in english. Sometimes it doesn't transfer in the same way.

"likeable" is fine Cujo...."popular" to me could definitely be taken in a sarcastic way as well! Especially with a well timed eye roll

Infectuous or cute might work just a little better. "likeable laugh" just doesn't seem to fit together as well IMO :D

Your point is VERY well made about the translation word for word. Someone else mentioned it in another thread about trying to think in Spanish, instead of reverting everything back to English and then back again to Spanish. While I am sure that is much better, it seems that is a tactic easier to achieve from immersion in Espanol? No?

Thanks Tst, one of our esteemed vets PM'd me the explanation.

As far as thinking in spanish or how you can get to that point can be tough unless you DO bite the bullet for 3 months or so and immerse yourself. But just like anything, it takes work.

How shitty is the first 3 weeks of going to the gym after not being there for years? Exactly.

When I was learning english I eventually began to think in english but a HUGE advantage I had was that everybody (practically) was speaking it. I learned very quickly I think mostly due to the fact that I wanted to be a part of conversations, the girls, not wanting to fail socially.

But whatever motivates you right? Since guys occasionally visit CR the urgency to learn isn't quite the same. Now for those vets that live in CR, that urgency should be at least more heightened.

Once you dedicate those few months you will be surprised at how much you retain. Maybe a drill you could do is watch TV with the volume off and tell yourself (or think to yourself) in spanish what is happening on TV.

I've taken the stance to preach a little less about learning, but my #1 piece of advice will always be to learn. Again, I want those to learn so their experiences with the chicas, price, services, etc.. are better. There is no other reason, other than maybe being able to talk code in situations when spanish is actually the code... 8)

Gents:

One other point that has not been explicitly mentioned about being able to converse a little in spanish - there are some hot chicas who you might have fewer chances of attracting and enjoying without being able to speak passable spanish. I know first hand about this one. My two best GFE's have resulted from this and they turned into longer term situations. Which is good for me as I like a mixture of both one nighters and long termers.

You cannot get to that level with all chicas but those that might be GFE's might not warm up to you- or vice versa (If you like your vice versa!! ) without communication in spanish. As always YMMV.
