Very good inforamtion. I arrive Saturday at 9:30PM at the airport. I've heard the rate is not good at the airport. What would be the best plce to exchange Saturday night late and on Sunday? Last year one night I exchanged at the SL. I could not tell you the rate (too much to drink) but I'm sure (?) it was fair. So is there a good/better place to exchange on Sunday?
Thanks

There's a lot of great things about the SL. Changing money is not one of them. Hotel rates in general are pretty lousy. The Colonial is open late...but what I normally do is withdraw out of my checking account at the Scotiabank ATM next to the duty free downstairs...interbank rate and no fee...this way I have some colones for the cab etc.

Bob,
Just to clarify what you think you've heard. The rate at the exchange booth downstairs near the baggage claim is what is not good. In fact, the rates they offer is downright criminal. The rate upstairs at the bank booths near where you get the exit stamps is completely another story. Their rates are perfectly fine. The problem for you is that by the time your clear immigration and customs (and get your bags if you've checked any luggage) the upstairs booths will probably be closed.

Where is this bank, are you talking about the (BCR) bank directly across from hotel Morazan on the corner? If so you don't have to wait in line for a teller at the main counter...as you walk in they have a seperate currency change teller in the back left corner, a sign back there says Cambio corner or Cambio tienda or something.

BCR is on the SE corner. BN is on the north side 25 meters west of the corner. BN does not have a special exchange teller or at least did not the last time I was in there.
