US dentists are some of the biggest crooks and you should always check up on them with your state health dept. if anything out of curiousity.

I stopped going to my last dentist because her receptionist flat out lied to me but before that I discovered she mis-diagnosed a patient (or missed in this case pre-cancer in the pallet that when you go in for an exam is a standard checklist item to check for, not just ring up $$$$$ for all kinds of work on the teeth). I read the whole report and turns out she came honest and paid a fine (learned her lesson) so hung on until the receptionist lied.

Any Dr. need to check up on.

I am 2/3 thru my root canal with the venerable Dr. Chen. I like him better than the Florida dentist who did my root canal in Nov. for $1100. Total cost with x-rays.............$80.

There is no question that dental work in Costa Rica is far cheaper then in the United states and that Dr. Chen is on the low side of pricing in CR of Dentists who speak English.

What I think is often overlooked is the fact that Dr. Chen is a super nice guy who goes out of his way to make sure you understand exactly what he is going to do, makes sure you are comfortable and treats you like a person. Many dentists in the U.S. treat you like a cash machine and show little regard for you as a person.

How do I find a good dentist that does Veneers? I heard that doing Veneers is more of an art than skill? I don't want my teeth to look like Gary Debussy.

You got to find the right dentist for this. I have a friend that went to Prisma and consulted for and expected veneers . After two hours in the chair they showed him a mirror and all his Great , Healthy, front teeth were ground down to fangs. They capped all his teeth.

HE ONLY WENT IN FOR VENEERS AND THEY RUINED ALL HIS TEETH.

He had 9 months of pain and finally paid a US doctor 4500 to fix the teeth that hurt. They had to do several root canals.

Did he not request veneers but simply expected them?

I had a look at Prisma's website and veneers are available.

Would it be correct to assume Mr. Chen to be lower scale in comparison to a practice like Prisma?

I'm exploring the option of dental treatment the next time I return to SJ. I want a veneer replaced, a new mouth guard (I grind my teeth when I sleep) and teeth bleached.

For those who have used Mr. Chen, would you say he is up to date on the latest advancement in technological dental procedures?

Thanks.

He had a 45 minute consult with the Prisma Lady and she explained they were a "skin" that covers healthy teeth. Then her husband did the work and he had a big surprise.

I would say that Dr Chen is on the low scale.

I have an appointment this morning with another dentist in Paseo Colon, Dr. Susanah Zomer and Alejandro Pinchanski this morning. I went there last week for a cleaning and they didn't seem too impressed with the two teeth the Dr. Chen worked on. The color of the filling does not match my natural tooth. I am going to have xrays done and get them to change the Yellow filling to a white one that matches.

There office is 100% modern. They have the camera so you can see what they want to show you on a monitor.

Ill write more later on what my xrays say and I'll ask them about veeners.

They did all the work on a Friends mouth and she was very happy.

Before you book an appointment with Dr. Chen you should read this recent thread http://www.costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=23439. In it Scubabum recounted how a treatment that he initially reported on very favorable earlier in this thread went horribly bad. You should also note the post by Icantstayaway just a few messages back in this thread.

I had a similarly bad experience with Dr. Chen last month where he refilled a tooth only to have the filling come loose less than 3 days later on the flight home. Ironically, it turned I was actually lucky that it came out as it did. Because I then has a gaping hole in my tooth I was forced to go to a US dentist and when he took x-rays it revealed that Dr Chen had failed to drill out all the decay before refilling the tooth. If the filling had not fallen out, that decay would have gone undetected and grown worse possibly necessitating a root canal further down the road. You might save a few bucks with Dr. Chen and be happy initially with what you think the results to be, but it could also wind up costing you a lot more in dollars and misery in the long run.

It has gotten so bad that Irish Drifter, who recommended Dr Chen earlier in this thread and was probably the main promoter of Dr. Chen's services on this board, has since WITHDRAWN his recommendation for him (presumably because of the bad experiences of Scuba, Icantstayaway, myself and a few others guys who reported directly to him).
