I was doing some research for a relative who was considering travelling abroad for hip surgery, and visited both Cima and Clinica Biblica. Both hospitals were equal or better in terms of facilities than any hospital that I have seen here in Canada.

You don't have to stay 14 days in CR. They say that, but you don't have to do it. Stay only 5 days if you want. On the 5th day, go back to the doctor for a check and then if all is well, leave CR. A hat and sunglasses will hide the fact that you had surgery. Once you are in FL, you can go to your regular doctor to have stitches removed. Even if you get an infection, your US doctor can and will treat it.

My doctor said nothing like that - he actually complimented the Mexican doctor's work. Don't worry about it.

Worry about it. Liability is too much of an issue in the US. If you want this to be an option work it out with your MD before you go so you know he wont push you to the ER.

Worry about any type of Surgery ANYWHERE - especially in a foreign country. You are going about this correctly though - research and ask around a lot to see what other's experiences have been so you can make an informed decision. It's your health we're talking about.

You know, the USA is a foreign country to a lot of people.

Many many many people have surgery abroad and then return for their doctor to take care of the minor post-surgery details. Even if something bad happens (infection), doctors still take care of the issue and insurance will pay.

There are lots of good surgeons world wide.

It isn't wide spread yet, but some insurance companies are offering patience the option of traveling abroad to get surgery. They pay for travel, hotel, really good after care and other benefits; and it is still cheaper than the USA.

Some will say, but I can't sue if something goes wrong. You can't sue HMOs in the USA so no biggie to me.

i think in some instances its not an option. insurance companies are making out-sourcing mandatory
