Never, and I mean never tell them you are staying in the Gulch when they ask. If pressed I will say the Aurola Holiday Inn.

As Gringotim said - what if they don't want to take them to your place. I usually stay at the Presidente - is that considered a "monger hotel" to the locals. Lots of families and tree-huggers stay there so is there wrong with disclosing that info. I mean I know the Del Rey is out as that is a definite monger hotel.

Please advise vets as I am curious about this topic

Mighty1,

Yes, it also has a bad name. The 'big three' have a stigma attached to them. I don't even like bringing up the Holiday Inn either, it is marginal.

I have felt comfortable going back to their place, only once have I had a Tica ask to go to mine. The ladies I have met are all employed and every dwelling that I have visited have been clean.

Oh yeah...Ron Jeremy, also known as the Hedgehog! Did you see him on
that reality TV show recently? He was sharing residences with Tammy Faye Baker, Vanilla Ice, Eric Estrada, and a few others. Talk about a motley crew!

Dman...sometimes even chicas with jobs, due to their circumstances, live in relative squalor.

Mighty1...a couple of times, I've had rooms in the Gulch and the BW Irazu
simultaneously. I'd take the BM chicas to the Morazan, then later that night take my non-pro novia to the BW Irazu. It's expensive, but it's not bad
for two or three days if you have a non-pro novia.

Having 2 rooms seems a little bit of an extravagance to me (unless 1 of them is in the Hotel Asia  ) although it is certainly one way to go. Personally, I'd rather spend that extra $50+ on chicas. Decide what you are going to do. If you are going to stick with the pros and semi-pros, you might as well stay where the action is. If one night you secure a date with a non-pro, you can still change hotels for that night or get a second room. Thats what I had to do one time between the DR and the Don Carlos. But you can also pick a hotel that reasonably serves both needs. There are several hotels that border the gulch (rather than being in the very belly of the beast) that are fairly chica friendly. The Don Carlos and the Castillo are two that come to mind. You will have to share the hotel with families and eco-tourists so you will need to tone down your act and multiple guests each night are out, but you are still within walking distance or a very short cab from the action. In the case of the 2 previously mentioned hotels you are actually closer to ZB, NF and El Pueblo. If scoring non-pros will be your primary pursuit than hotels farther afield begin to make more sense. You could also choose someplace like the BW Irazu, which would be particularly good if you plan to do your hunting in Escazu. OTOH, the Casa Conde is much closer to downtown and the University at San Pedro and will definitely impress your date a lot more.

The best "date" hangout I have found is Hotel Eden on the highway heading out to LImon from downtown...just 1 km past the Radisson Hotel. It is a fancy "no tell hotel" and is culturally accepted and preferable to these women who mostly have K*ds at home but still want to go party with a kind gringo guy. Last I knew, it was around $22 for 4-6 hours in very nice rooms with jacuzzi, modern furnishings, cable TV (cant remember if they had porn or not since I usually focus on the lady)... and a "dumb waiter" system for taking and delivering drinks and food orders as well as paying your tab...WITHOUT EVER SEEING ANYBODY. If you drive a car there, you just pull into an available covered parking spot, and walk in the room. It's actually a cool place to spend time alone from the rest of the world...you and your babe of choice.

Also, while yes, some of these non-pro women are looking for relationships, others just want to party and have a good time just like us.

Tman...if the Eden is that nice, with all the amenities you mention, how can
they stay in business by charging $22 a night/'half night'?

I definitely plan to check it out on my next visit!

Right on Tman -

"Also, while yes, some of these non-pro women are looking for relationships, others just want to party and have a good time just like us".

My Tico Guanacaste driver Rigo, he swears to this. Last month on the way to SJO we talked about it a lot. He speaks nearly perfect English and there is no way I misunderstood. He is mid-thirties single/divorced and hangs out at Castro Bar. He knows me pretty well (and that I am 49) and my level of espanish (maybe 35%) and he tell me "come with me, you will do fine!

I haven't yet but I am going to on one of the next trips, and I have to believe him. He told me exactly what Tman said, and that is how he gets his entertainments.

That's my story and a coarse I'm sticking to it.

i can't even score with a working woman at the del rey. everytime i approach a lady and ask '?cuanto cuesta por una hora?'
they reply back '!tres mil dolares!' sheeeeesh, i must be really ugly and smelly.

i am not the best looking guy, nor am i a smooth operator.
but, i am happy that some of you guys are scoring with the non-pro local chicas. the ladies are absolutely stunning !

To Gringotim:

The Eden is huge -- at least 100 rooms -- and I have never been there when it wasn't packed. I generally have to make 2-3 circuits of the place before I can fine an open garage. Don't worry about the owners' financial status. All they have to do is pay the cleaning staff and rake in the cash.

A very nice place, I must say. Big beds, jacuzzi, shower, marble floors in the bathroom. Very tricked-out short-time place.

I found this on Stray Reality site:

Bar and Discotheque Castro's - Fun on Two Levels - 100 metros al oeste de la - farmacia Calzada - Barrio México - San José -Phone: 506 256 8789
This place was established many years ago as a simple bar and is recognized today as a landmark. Far away seemed the day that gyroscopic lights, trendy music and even karaoke were going to consume the small peaceful hideaway it use to be, where our fathers and grandfathers went for a drink while chatting about politics, soccer and other things. Nowadays, Castro's has expanded its premises with a second level that contains a bar, while the lower level is a discotheque. It maintains its tradition of the olden days offering a complimentary boca (snack), with every beverage purchased.

Is this the place?
