I think I would be a little skeptical about those low prices for glasses. Frame.s in Costa Rica are high...at least for those that I like. One man's bargain is another man's junk. I have purchased at least 8 pair of glasses from Optivision and have never heard of the special talked about...doesn't mean it doesn't exsist but I wouldn't buy glasses at Kaiser....let alone $17 from Optivision. Once they needed five tries to get it right..yes five...but they stood by their work. If I were in the states and coming here I would GO TO COSTCO AND BUY MY FRAMES...PERIOD. You will do better than here. I just priced single vision polorized sun glasses yesterday....lenses were qouted at 39000 colones. You might get darker glass in the states.
Dental work...jump on a plane. Glasses, I have never heard of anyone saving money here.

I can tell you I wear glasses. I have priced frames in CR... name brand frames and they are 1/2 the cost if not more than in Texas. Lenses I don't know about.

also try Asembis. I got an exam and frames and glasses for about $25. nice frames too. they have places scattered around. One very near that hospital that burned down.
Call 285-5881 and get the locations. You need a spanish speaker to make the call, and go with you. No english has been my experience.

Terminator,
Nobody here is interested in glasses from California, at least I'm not. The thread is about glasses in Costa Rica.

Sorry, I thought these two places were cheap. I tried to pass it on to CRT members. Are the glasses in CR better than these?

Do not have any experience with that but this place advertises in the Tico Times (no name or location given). The contact info they list is

Costa Rica 800-266-8228

USA 1-336-510-5615

800lentes@gmail.com

They advertise all sizes and immediate delivery. You might want to check them out.

Current price on glasses in CR

Opticas Vision had an advertisement in todays Diario Extra

"Anteojos (eye glasses)....desde 9,000 colones (from $17.50)

Incluye:

Exam de la vista. (eye exam)
Aro de metal o pasta (metal or plastics frames)
Lentes para de lejos, cerca o bifocals (near sightedness, far sightedness or bifocals)
Estuche duro para maxima proteccion (hard case for maximum protection)
Franela especial para limpieza (special flannel cloth for cleaning)"

Do not let the word from, in the price, bother you. I have bought these specials before, and will be there tomorrow to buy again, and the from means the lenses are plastics and the frame selection is limited. They will try to up sell you of course but they will deliver at the advertised price. Delivery time is usually 2 or 3 days.

More expensive than US, at least for me.

At Opticas Vision, I paid $27 for 1 box of Acuvue-2's. They are cheaper than regular Acuvues in the US. I get reg Acuvues for $64/4 boxes or $16/box from my local optometrist.

I priced glasses at 4 different places, all within walking distance of the DR, and ended up getting a pair from Asembis. Just before my trip, I went to Walmart for a price comparison and they wanted $500-600 for exam, frames, transitional, progressive plastic bifocals. With this figure in mind, the price at Asembis was $100 for trifocals---1000 colones for the exam. All the other places were higher, but faster to get. Asembis takes two weeks, so my rent-a-novia will have to send them up, or I will pick them up in November.
Thanks for tip on buying glasses in CR !!

Brother Orange was somewhat mistaken in his rebuke to Terminator. The Zenni Optical site has info your eye doctor should give you but isn't required to--essential info necessary for fitting the specs correctly. If you try to order new specs without it, the dispensing optician may not be able to fit them correctly. This is the Pupillary Distance and is explained in Information>>Your Prescription. Actually that whole part of the Website has news you can use but that part is crucial. This gets you right there:
http://www.zennioptical.com/information ... iption.tpl
I found both sites cited by Terminator useful for comparison shopping purposes. Personally I wouldn't by glasses on the Web as I have always been a bit tough to fit--kind of like buying a custom-made suit by just giving a tailor basic measurements.

You may or may not find this useful. Here in the US they want me to get an exam every year, and I am not supposed to get more than a year worth of contacts.I buy Acuvue(as someone asked about).

I have my prescription, but as I said in the US it is useless after a year.I guess Europe does not have that law.

http://www.opticalinstitute.com/

Put in the info from your old box,and they ship it to you.Same as the price I pay here.Maybe a bit cheaper.I don't THINK you will get the same brand cheaper in CR,because I think the price is controlled by the manufacturer, but that is pure conjecture on my part.

Anyway,it is where I order mine. And if you happen to have an old box on hand, that is all you need.

I can highly recomend ASEMBIS from personal experience. Went there for an examation and new glasses. The Dr. caught the cateract problem and their eye surgeon did the operations. He (Dr. Mora) is one of the best anywhere. Glasses and exam are very inexpensive there. As mentioned, they have several locations and except for Dr Mora, I never found anyone who spoke english. The one I went to is located about 2 blocks north of Hospital Calderon Guardia (about 5 blocks from the Sportsmen.

Somebody questioned the need to buy designer frames. As someone who has been wearing glasses most of his life, I have found that designer frames, though a bit more expensive, are generally better made.
