The way I see it, this is just human nature in our world today. We seem to all want more for less and/or something for nothing. It is all about what we can get today without thought about tomorrow which, sadly, includes tossing friends/jobs away with no thought because a BBD (Bigger, Better Deal) came through the door.
Don't think Costa Rica is any different from any other country in the world including the U.S. By that I mean the U.S. government will support corrupt leaders of other countries if it is in the interests of whoever has the money. Case in point, Sadam Hussein in Iraq. Gave him money/weapons to fight Iran for years then had him excuted a few years later when he was no longer serving our purpose.
Another point, China. Our government is willing to allow extensive business relations with a communist government with a human rights record that is terrible but Wal-Mart is making mucho dinero. I'd bet if Cuba could produce cheap goods like that, our government would lift the trade restrictions ASAP.
So IMHO, it is all about the money today without looking down the road to tomorrow. Sounds like a DR girl to me

Guess you missed it so I will repeat it for your benefit.

I am not going to waste any more of the boards time responding to your drivel. If you want to carry on this "discussion" will be glad to do so using PM's.

The US will give CR $$$ but tell them how they want it spent. PRC will give $$ and could care less how it is spent as long as they get what they want (ie oil, oil, oil etc) just like they do in Africa.

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, CR has no oil to barter with. I think China is more interested in having those few countries who support Tawain to change allegiance so that Tawain is isolated. There eventual plan, of which they have publicly announced, is to return Taiwan to the fold of the PRC.

I'll never understand why China is so hot on getting Taiwan back. Then again, I'll never understand why anyone would try to eat rice with chopsticks.

Unfortunately here in Costa Rica from the richest man to the middle class man. They dont want to work and feel just fine beginning for money. a couple of weeks ago at a stop light a fairly normal dressed man came over to my car and said he had no money to buy his Ch*ldren milk. Ofcourse as he was stumbling and reeking of alcohol, I couldnt believe he wanted me to pay for his beer tab!! Its obsurd to know that people here have no quams about putting a hand out for nothing! And one this is for certain (in my experience) TICOS do not pay you back, they think it is a gift when they ask to borrow money!!! Pathetic.

Man, CR sounds exactly like Los Angeles.

It doesnt surprise me. Taiwan pays for a bridge and who knows what else and then they go to bed with the Chinese!!! Its the Tico way!

I don't think CR has much to offer China besides support in their argument that Taiwan is part of China. China doesn't import much (relative to what they export), and what they do import CR doesn't have.
What bothers me is that the ideology (spelling?) of Taiwan being an idependent country should not be for sale. If CR has to decide who they want to do buisness with fine, but they should be able to do this and keep their stance (now x-stance) that Taiwan is independent. I'm sure the USA is China's largest importer, and I'm pretty sure we support Taiwan as independent.
The CR president sold its country's beliefs and principles to the highest bidder. Shame on him.

Surftown, That is not just a witty reply, but a very good point. I have yet to find an ounce of honor in a Tico. They feel they are superior to all other latin people (Because there "European"'--Yeah Right), but in reality i find them worse. Nicas may be Indians, and may be poor, but at least they work for what they earn. Ticos don't want to get their hands dirty because it is below them. So Surftown, great response.

People are surprised to learn that CR has a positive trade balance with China. Last year the imported $618 million but exported in excess of one billion $.

the technique is to bring the bowl to your mouth and plow it in,
thats why i always ask for a fork whenever they give me chopsticks.

funny, i always get charged gringo rates in asia countries,
but they will assume i can use chopsticks

Tongue in cheek, I suggest Admin 1 create another section (3rd world politics/global or Latin American economics/etc.) for such recent discussions on this "Gentlemen's Guide to Costa Rica" board such as this and CAFTA, ad nauseam... Let's get back to real good stuff including some new things such as dating bartenders, street action, dress codes at the Prez, pro Jaco/anti Jaco... On the serious side, as one who only visits CR on average twice yearly, I have enough to think about our situation here in the US without fooling myself into thinking I have any right to condemn daily life in CR or the Tico mindset.
