This law would apply if you are marrried or share the same address. Not for a hooker that is in your room for an hour.
THE PROBLEM IS HOWEVER IF YOU RUN INTO A CROOKED COP WILLING To GIVE A LOOSE INTERPRETATION OF "RELATIONSHIP" FOR A CHICA AND PAYOFF.

Leave it to the Ticos to mimic American style laws...and let the legal pendulum swing WAY the other direction. I stopped living in CR primarily because of the corrupt legal system. This kind of focus on law is just another absurd example of their irrational system of justice. This will be just another area CR courts can be manipulated by money. I can see it now...women suing their husbands, boyfriends, or "Johns". The boys have to buy their way out of mandatory detention while waiting for the courts to hear their cases. Where will these cases line up in line behind the 2-3 years of bad real estate deals waiting to be heard?

For such a beautiful country with beautiful women...they sure are phucked up.

This law does seem to have "Gringo" written all over it.

You guys ain't seen insanity like California law. Here in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia we have laws like automatic confiscation of all firearms if someone files a restraining order against you. Or how about this one: your exwife can refile for Ch*ld support based upon 25% of your NEW wife's income. Fun, eh? That really puts a damper on marriage #2. Then we have spousal abuse laws to "protect" mail order brides. All they have to do is file a spousal abuse report and they get an automatic green card. Guess what? These foreign women know this and they get into the country for a week before they file "spousal abuse" and they get an automatic green card. Dozens of guys, if not hundreds, have done jail time, lost jobs, had guns confiscated, all because some bitch in the Philippines wanted a green card and joined a "dating" service.

The insanity continues. Just wait 'till President Barak Obama signs the "Monger Abuse Relief Act" and all you CRT boys have to pay $10,000 to some orphanage in Limon...

hmmm. Well I personally know of one 'mail order bride' who was held at gunpoint by her 'husband' because she had the nerve to save him from insulin shock. I know that's just one case, but she had friends who were also abused by their 'husbands' who felt they were property, not people. Sometimes laws are badly written and sometimes badly enforced, but I find it hard to see men as victims. If you marry a Filipina and it all falls apart, maybe you needed to take a few minutes to know what you were getting into in the first place? I am taking an uncharacteristly Libertarian viewpoint here... personal responsibility. If you don't want a messy divorce, don't get married. If you don't want rotten Ch*ldren, don't have any. Worked for me.

I think you guys need to get a grip. Its not all about us. It says in the very first sentence that this law is "designed to protect women from domestic violence" ie wives, live-in partners and girlfriends. And most of us see our "novias" by the hour or the night. Very few of us have live-in girlfriends.

There is a real problem of physical and psychological abuse by ticos of their women. This is both a cultural, economic and historical phenomenon. Cultural because it is a corollary to the latin machismo culture. Economic because abuse often coincides with poverty and alcoholism as frustrated males often cope by striking out. And historical because until recently the political forces and laws for the protection of women were weak to non-existent. And if a women is married or living with a guy and she is abused, she is particularly at risk because there may not be many places that she can go. And THAT is what this law is targeted at.

Sure, some money grubbing puta might try to take advantage of the law by stretching it to apply to gringos. But the gringos who come to CR to monger are known to be mostly pussywhipped when it comes to their relationships with women. The gringas have trained us well, because they are decades ahead of the chicas when it somes to women's rights. And on the other side putas won't make the most credible accusers without any other corrobrating evidence (unless they are strippers in Durham NC and the gringos are Duke Lacrosse players). Particularly when you consider that the putas who are most likely to try this game, will most likely reduce their credibility even further after they've tried it more than once or twice.

And whats to be gained for them by having us thrown in jail. The best way for them to play this is to try to use it as blackmail. Now that might cause some nervous moments and some gringos would probably be tempted to cough up some dough to make those accusations simply go away. But we should realize that the risk of false accusation of rape was always there and something you rarely if ever heard happening to any monger. And so probably wasn't something a chica could too easily just make up and have believed. The only thing that has changed now is the severity of the sentence.

And as far as the new part of the law, even beyond whether a one hour session could really be called a "relationship", how can telling a chica she is not worth 5 times the average daily tico income for just an hour's work be called insulting, whether in public or private? And how can calling one a puta, which most of us are loath to do anyway, be devalueing if that is in fact what she is?

Personally, as long as we continue to act as gentlemen I don't think we need to lose much sleep over this.

This law could be VERY SCARY if you are in a long-term relationship with a chica. I mean come on.... "you cannot call her fat". Give me a break!!!!! My ex-novia and I had a running joke by calling eachother fatty (gordito, gordita). It was usually all just fun and games, but sometimes, she would get unexpectedly mad.

I can't even use all my fingers and toes to count how many chicas are pissed off at me. Some girls are mad at me - and I've never even talked to them. They have just decided that they don't like me. You know why they are mad???? Because, I'm not giving them business.

I can easily see this going really bad for foreigners in CR. If it passes, it should be two-sided, not one sided.
