A dissenting take here... If it were me, I would take that 5k and open a new bank account and get an ATM card, if you want total anonymity, find a single friend to open it for you and just take the ATM card. You'll probably be okay with 5000 cash but then again, shit does happen, as you well know if you read this board.

J-cujo,

Some good advice above!

My dos colones… Have the SL send the van for you, it will cost a few $$s more, but you have the peace of mind that it is a trusted driver.

The SL will be happy to take a cash payment in advance for your room, have done it myself. Running a tab at the SL is a nice amenity, and as mentioned probably the only place in town to do so safely. With the CRT discounts given, I generally am surprised at how low my food and beverage tabs are at the end of a trip when reviewing the charges on my SL bill  . But then again, I charge my bottles of liquor to GR’s room… :D

I also have an around the neck and under your shirt type of passport and cash holder that BKtuna refers to, they work great for travel, but I would not use it for daily use. If you do get one, they will make you run it through the x-ray machine at airport security check, so you want to put your cash in your pocket to walk through security. When in CR, I like a good old rubber band instead of a money clip…

Have a great trip! Don’t forget to stop at duty free on your way in for rum and Cuban cigars.

Mendo

If you are staying at the SL run a tab for drinks and food. You won't have to pull any money out. Bill and his staff are very honest. I did this on my stay, and for the amount of food and drinks I charged, it seemed quite low. I drank rum/cokes daily (way too many sometimes), bought rounds for others, ate at least one meal per day there (bought chicas meals also) and my tab was around $200.00 for a week. Although, as has been stated many times by the vet's, do not run a tab in most of the clubs, bars, etc. The SL is one of the exceptions to the rule that I have first hand knowledge of.

Orange is correct about a money belt of some kind. Most of the money can be kept in it. I would keep an additional amount out for cab, and if you want to buy something at the duty free shop, at the airport (liquor/cigars, etc.), for your room .

Also, become a CRT VIP, it appears that you have not joined yet. You not only save money on the room at the SL, but food and drinks also. There are many other establishments that offer discounts for VIP's.

I do agree with your points regarding these discounts.. I run a few establishments here and i think they should just do away with these discount mentality people

You may want to read Ticofrankie's entire post (Pirates Open Again Thread) about not wanting the pinche gringo discount dollars. He has still not listed the establishments that he wishes me to stay away from. While I wish him much success with his business(es), I hope that he soon lists what they are so my pinche gringo discount dollars are not spent in his establishments. From the post it came from, it seemed IMHO that one was Pirates. I would hope that if Ticofrankie does not represent Pirates, the owners will let me know either by post or PM. If he has no interest in Pirates, I would like to venture there my next trip. If he is a part of Pirates, the only Pirates that I will be spending my pinche gringo discount dollars on is Cpt. Morgan.

Have a great time.

health & happiness:

Amex Traveler's Checks may be an option instead of carrying all that cash if that's an issue for you.

In terms of $500 a day, you CAN spend that much and more... God knows, I've spent that much daily just on chicas, ESPECIALLY on my first few trips... Then again, not everyone takes on 23 chicas in just 5 days...

Bad goes to worst, you bring back what you didn't spend and deposit it back into the bank. Stick with the $500 a day and like you said, better to bring too much than too little.

I spend 600 a day on the DR Colombians! What are you guys talking about? 3 chicas a day at 200 bucks a pop for una hora each. I do that just to screw everything up for the rest of you cheap fellows! :P

Thanks for all the input guys. Yea like I said there's no way I'm bringing less than 5, I might sprinkle another 1k on top of that for good measure.
Before I make the mistake of sounding like a high roller or big balla, I'm not.
But could you imagine reading this board for over 2 years practically having CR in my backyard (living in South Florida) and NOT go nuts?
I invite you all to go way back to your first trip and ask yourself were you as prepared as I seem to be thanks only to the brotherhood..

So I must make this first trip a splurge fest. No, not tossing c-notes at the ladies feet, just in general having no monetary worries. I'm also a golfer, carry about a 7 handicap, and it looks like when it's all said and done each round I play will be about $150.

I checked my hundreds and only 2 of them started with CB. I guess the initials CB is not wanted in more ways than one...

Since your only real concern is the transportation from the Airport to your hotel,I wouldn't be too concerned. If I am not mistaken, you can ask for a receipt from the payment window that names your taxi driver. If this is true then he won't be able to get away with robbing you. Also if you are travelling with a friend you could ask him to carry some.

As far as exchanging money,I wouldn't waste time waiting in the long bank lines to exchange money. You can get bank rates at either the Colonial Casino or the Horseshoe with no passport or recording of transactions. You can exchange $200-300 in each place "at each shift since no recording". The shift change at the Horseshoe is 2:00pm and Colonial at 3pm.

Then once you have exchanged the whole wad, just give it ALL to the first large breasted Colombiana for an hour of fun,and then you won't have any money worries.

Interesting point. One that I have never even thought about.

I agree with Ruff. But my last trip I had access to 3000 and was there 4 days. All told 12 ladies, food room and drinks for folks (I just do water) only 1900. Better to over shoot them get caught short

Lots of good advice here. Ive only made 1 trip 9-5-06 to 9-9-06.I charged the room so that was not a worry.$500 a day is a lot,i ate and drank well, tipped well(to much at times)and had a great time. I always started out with $200 worth of colones and $100 U.S. in small bills. Except for the first day this was more than enough.Whoever said 2 girls at once gets expensive was right, i wont do it again with independents, but will give ZB a try. When i traveled there in Sept, i wore a shirt with a pocket($200 american small bills)and divided the rest of my money between my 2 front pockets +a stash in a sock.I took airport taxi to del rey with no problems price then was $13. You pay at cab window they give you a receipt, driver finds you when you walk out the door and off you go. The cab ride is as scary as anything you will encounter, lots of zigging and zagging, avoiding trucks scooters etc.Del rey had no problems changing money.

Here's a cheap tip:

Find the hottest, sexiest, slimmest, biggest-rack Columbiana,Dominicana,Tica,Panamica (is that right) -- and bring her back to your room. Don't mention a single price, and she probably won't either.

Get to it. Screw, shag, phuck, just get busy.

At the end, when she asks for dinero, plato, dollares, colones -- speak to her in your best, most perfect english (which she'll understand, trust me) and say:

"You mean, it wasn't a freebie?"

(ducks)
