...I would really be suprised if any bank in CR would clear a check from the states in 7 business days. 10-15 business days is more realistic.

On the contrary!

I make it a point to deposit (at least) one U.S. check into my account at Banco Cuscatlan every time I'm in CR (about 6-7 trips per year). I monitor my account on the internet daily/weekly. Most checks clear within 7 business days from the day of the deposit. One check took 9 business days, and 2 or 3 have taken 8 business days. But (about) 3 out of every 4 checks are cleared on the 7th business day. I've had 2 occasions where the checks cleared on the 6th day after the deposit.

Surprise !!!

Respectfully,

Banks in CR are all over the map on this.

The private banks (Cuscatlan, Scotia, ProAmerica, etc.) are much quicker
and will clear a check in anywhere from 5 to 15 business days. They clear South Florida checks quicker for some reason.

The National banks will hold your money as long as possible. Banco National official check clearance time is 45 business days yes thats right 9 weeks.

Absolutely! Thanks Irish for confirmation on this.

I have had a check written on my South Florida Credit Union and deposited in Scotia Bank clear in 3 business days. When I showed Scotia a copy of my bank statement (downloaded from the net) they immediately cleared the funds.

I agree Scotia is an excellent bank. I have never found a long line, at most 2 or 3 people in line, everyone speaks english and are friendly. They are affiliated with Scotia Bank of Canada and operate in many other countries and therefore I feel very secure.

Have also heard good things about Cuscatlan but mixed reviews on ProAmerica.

I agree Scotia is a very good bank. As I live in CR I have deposited quite a few checks into the scotia account and it has always been 15 business days until the funds have cleared.

I like cuscatlan also but have never deposited a check with them.

Too bad funds are only gauranteed in the state banks which offer far less services.

I would have no reason to lie to you Zman. But like Irish stated, many of the banks in CR are all over the map.

When I opened my account at Cuscatlan a couple years ago, they told me that it would take approx 10 - 12 business days for US checks to clear, so I expected about a 3 week turnaround time. But I have been pleasantly surprised with their consistency of the 7 business day turnaround.

But I also have a feeling that being in S. Florida definitely helps......

Pura Vida,
