Living here, I have never had any problem with the police at all. I think we are making a mountain of a molehill.

- Keep your papers in order. (duh)
- If you are going to walk, wear long pants and a dark shirt and walk like you have a purpose.
- Avoid the situation by taking a taxi.

Personally, I would much rather deal with a Costa Rican cop than many of the jack-booted thugs with a badge that stalk the USA. Mention that you have rights in the US and you are likely to get a demonstration of your "right" to remain unconscious.

Pac, that's the typical response on this board to every incident of this kind. Honestly, if you're walking out of the HDR at 2:00 am, you're a potential target. Either have room at the DR or take a taxi, even it's for two blocks.

Thank you, Billy Paul and Mick Hucknall.

Unless Paul & Hucknell were the writers, you're mistaken. "If You Don't Know Me (By Now)" was recorded first by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, then redone by Simply Red.

But mebbe you was naming the writers?

God and Prolijo forgive me, but for the first time I actually rapid-skimmed Prolijo's posts here. No offense to a great mind, but for the first time since joining CRT, I actually found Prolijo to be tedious. :(

Cops: Well, one could always...

1.) Point to the surveillance cameras outside the Colonial while politely requesting badge numbers. Don't know if there's Costa Rican idioms at play here, but I would translate "badge number" as "numero de escudo," literally "shield number."

2. Run like hell. Yeah, there may be some resisting arrest charges made, but I'd get into the midst of as many people as possible i.e. the del Rey.

I'm not second guessing the Mad German hereat all. If I were in the back of the clown car, I'd figure the bribe might just cover the cost of cleaning my runny shit off the backseat upholstery... Yep, I'm one of those gutless wonders who would probably pay up. Sorry if I'm part of the problem.

No offense taken, El C. Frankly, I'm really surprised that this was only the first time.

As for your musical references, I looked it up. You're indeed correct that "If you don't know me by now" was the 1972 breakout single for Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes that was later covered by Simply Red in 1989. However, Jazz is not that far off either. Mick Hucknall is the lead singer for Simply Red. I'm not sure where Billy Paul comes into all this unless he did the song too, which is possible. The writers of the song were actually Jeff Gamble and Leon Huff, who wrote many hit R&B songs during that era including Billy Paul's best known hit "Me and Mrs. Jones." Are you guys still with me on all this or am I being too TEDIOUS!!!  :P

Being a cop in Costa Rica is an entrepenewal(sp) enterprise. They are given a badge, gun, no training, uniform and told to go out there and earn themselves some dinero. And that's what they're doing :P

A month in a cell for what? My papers are together. I don't walk through the park to or from the HDR. I have the name and number of my attorney in my wallet along with a card from the Chief of Police at the Amon precinct, a personal friend.

Do you really think they are going to throw me in jail for a month because I refuse to pay a bribe? Hey, I would much rather be pulled over here than in the USA. I'll take my chances!

Brothers El Ciego and Prolijo--You got me on the Billy Paul, though he has done it in concert, as has Hall & Oates. SIDE NOTE: There's a terrific CD (Love Train--The Sound Of Philadelphia) and DVD (Love Train--The Sound Of Philadelphia--Live in Concert). If you appreciate Gamble & Huff and their associate, Thom Bell, this is essential. www.allmusic.com
Back to you, Chet.

Actually the police go through a rather long training course at the police academy. How good he training is I can not say either way.

I don't think it is fair to paint all the cops with the same brush. Yes there are some who are out looking for bribes but there also are others who bravely carry out the duties. Just recently the charity organized by Santas Bro donated some money to the family of a police officer who was shot in the face while on duty. There have been 3 or 4 reports already this year of police officers shot while apprehending criminals.
