Fox News reports today that 36 year old Miami woman Carla Stefaniak was abducted on November 28th in Costa Rica. She was supposedly last seen at 5am on November 28th getting into an “Uber” going from her BnB to the airport. Her Uber account has no record of the trip.

She didn't get into an Uber.

A body has been found behind the BnB. No confirmation yet, but it’s most likely her.

Exactly. I posted a link to the story.

They caught the security guards lying about seeing her leave, it was technically a safe home in Escazu, but a lone woman is always at risk.

The area is gated so unlikely a stranger slipped in, and why would a stranger bother to take the time to bury her, especially in a secured gated community?

All arrows point to one or more security guards, I'm betting an attempted rape gone bad.

Unfortunately, many times here, the cops or security guards are your enemy... :x

There were two angry ticas fighting and screaming at each other in my building where I live in Barrio Amon, sisters, lol, some family matter, one lived with a gringo as this is a gringo only compound.

The cops used it as an excuse to barge in every apartment, including mine, and snoop all over, then leave. I think they wanted to see what these gringos were up to. :x

This is not the USA where you can demand a search warrant, cooperate or get beat up or sent to jail with trumped up charges, I chose to be pleasant and cooperate. :?

Annnnd the suspect is a Nicaraguan. Unfortunately, this is not a surprise. I know that's not politically correct to point out, but there seems to be a pattern here.

It's always sad when such a young person dies while vacationing to another country, and even worse to be murdered. Me and her are practically the same age so it hits closer to home and she went down to celebrate her 36th. She was supposed to get on the usual 1:30pm flight back to FTL which most of us South Florida mongers use. No way she was getting an Uber for the airport at 5am.

At 5am on my last day I'm usually trying to get a last session from the Rey's overnight leftovers lol

When I first heard the story I thought she was somewhere close to downtown. Was surprised to hear it was in Escazu. Always thought that was one of the safer parts of town, especially for women.

This is why I take martial arts and recommend everyone to. There are some 15 year old girls in my class that can flip me and have me on my back within a split second, and they are only half my size literally since I'm 6'3, lol. You may never become Jackie Chan or be able to beat a UFC fighter, but you will be able to save yourself from a single or even a group of attackers. They are usually intoxicated and weapon wielding so they are easy to take down.

Once we leave the states the rules change drastically from what we are accustomed to and the cops aren't around to help. You have to be ready to help yourself.

Don't feel too comfortable, I'm a martial artist, about 200 lbs and almost 6 foot in good shape for my age, but I'm 64 and nowhere near as fast as I once was. I had to look in the mirror and face facts...I'm an old man...I used to strut myself and look upon most ticos as near dwarfs, skinny, easy takedowns. No longer.

I used to be confident years ago when I was younger, faster and stronger, thinking one little skinny guy would approach me face to face and try to demand money, I would then eviscerate and disembowel him, and for good measure and fun, break his neck, all while yawning, and afterwards, keep walking, enjoying the scenery. That doesn't seem to be the norm these days.

Usually most robberies, you get caught off guard, the m.o. is to jump out of a car, often 2 or 3, and they beat you senseless or stab you or both immediately and take your wallet while you're lying on the ground in agony.

I knew a young tough ex-marine, about 30 y/o here 10 years ago, tall, muscle bound, martial artist, he got his ass whooped by three little guys just walking where he should have avoided, the infamous Coca Cola area, wallet taken but no serious injury or stabbing, he always bragged he would kick ass if harrassed....

Best to always be on the lookout while on foot and although I don't always follow my own advice and do walk around the immediate gulch at night by myself, mostly the puta triangle, HLH, SL and HDR. Tourists would do well to walk in groups at night if they can or at least 2 guys, still no guarantee.

I think the gulch is pretty safe in the daytime but there are incidents reported as well, again, years ago, a 2 digit I.Q. pal of mine was staggering drunk out of the old New York Bar around 5 o'clock and he was accosted by a guy with a gun.

He tried to push him away, either the gun went off accidentally in the fracas or the guy shot intentionally, he go a bullet clean through his hand, lots of blood but got to the hospital fast.

Everyone should be on the lookout and be wary, don't talk to strangers, lol.

I don't view San Jose any more dangerous than my beloved home in S Florida, but we're on foot, not in our cars, and thieves believe, probably correctly, we're going to be carrying mo money than the average Tico and we're targets, sober, daytime, big and menacing looking nonetheless.

Be alert at all times as best you can and if you have to take a walk alone, late at night, best to call a cab, even a short distance, usually the bewitching hour is after 11 pm or so, but anytime you are at risk.

You know, for all the machismo that so many Latino males like to boast about, including Ticos, the laws of Costa Rica are pretty wimpy. Possession of firearms by law-abiding citizens is very restricted, hunting any animal anywhere in Costa Rica is illegal, and there is no death penalty. Hell, I was on at least one Costa Rica forum during the strike where people were complaining that using tear gas on people causing problems during the strike was a violation of one's human rights. Yet for all their "compassionate" and "humane" laws and policies the criminals down there are as brutal and sociopathic as ever.

I'm going to paint with a broad brush. At the national level (politically and the judiciary) Costa Rica is a progressive soyboi country. Carlito (the current president) would have been the perfect soyboi to play 'pajama boy' in the Omabacare commercial - in his footie PJs and big cup of hot chocolate.

And the criminals know it - criminals (the real kind) prey on the weak and thrive where they are surrounded by the weak. In the US (for example), if you commit armed robbery and get caught; you are charged, arraigned and if you get bail you have to make bail or you sit in jail until your trial (which might take a while). In CR? If you get caught, the judge tells you to come back for your trial. Unless you are a danger... you know, like Cuba Dave.

Yes, Dave got more 'preventive detention' prison time for his non-crime than murders get in Pura Vida Land.

Most Ticos are sick of it. The use of force to defend yourself is (technically) legal and lots of Ticos are arguing that the State has been unjustly on the side of the criminals when good guys dead them but the oligarchs, secure in their gated communities in Escazu, are ignoring them.

Of course this is a country where, when the National Assembly was debating a bill that would forfeit criminal gains from crime and corruption the committee reviewing the bill removed the provisions that would have allowed forfeiture of assets gained through political corruption... Why? Hmmm... It is a puzzlement.
