Hello all,

I will be going on my first trip down FEB 26 - MAR 5 . I am so excited, from reading all the posts sounds like going to be a great time. I've been to rio and I had a blast there and I hear it is 10 x better in SJ. Any suggestions during this time period? Oh also anyone gonna be be down there then, would love to meet up and hang with some of you from here 8) ..

Just one more thing;
If you get in an accident, forget about your pain and worry about your wallet - be especially wary of "good samaritins".

Well, Buzz, I hope that you do not stereotype everyone who wears a Rolex.

I for one do wear mine every time I have been there on 15+ trips in the last 5 years. I personally would never visit a country where I felt that insecure. I do use common sense when there, always traveling in groups and locking it up for the night in the safe if a chica is with me.

Quite frankly, I have walked down streets in LA, New York and Detroit where you are more likely to be ripped of than San Jose in a group of people. Some may disagree, but I won't change my lifestyle, I just wont go anyplace that I have that big of fear being myself. :twisted:

Guess I'm the ecotourist gringo monger.I wear my cargo shorts and hiking shoes day and night.I walk all over town and frequent mostly local places.Ticos have always been very freindly with me.I figure I am a gringo so might as well look like one.By the way cargo shorts with velcrow pockets are good defense for pickpockets and I never carry more money than I need.rbc100

This discussion has been had on this site many times the past year. End of day...those who want to wear shorts will wear them. Their money will get the same service as those who dont. Some people wear jewelry and nice watches...others dont risk it. It's all personal taste and choice which is Ok by me. I live here and dont wear shorts downtown unless I just got off the golf course. But, if I had legs like Dino...maybe I would wear them more often. No one wants to see MY white scraggly legs :roll:

There is no question that a Tico wearing shorts on the streets of San Jose would be unusual and a few years ago a gringo wearing shorts would have drawn looks of scorn.

But to say
Quote:
If you like to look like a local NERD go ahead by all means doesn't bother me any. It is a native custom that this is rude.

is just not correct. Many gringo's (not me because I prefer not to) wear shorts so if thats what you want to do...GO FOR IT. Sure Don Gordo would approve :lol:

Guys;
In my neighborhood (Los Yoses), many ticos wear shorts on Saturdays. Not just a few but many. During the week, these same guys work, so they dress appropriatly.

PS: Damm Tman, you took the words out of my mouth re Dino's legs.
