SAN JOSE, Costa Rica -- A strong, early morning earthquake Saturday jolted the Costa Rican capital, where leaders of 21 nations were gathered for the Ibero-American Summit.

Local radio stations said there were scattered reports of collapsed walls, shattered windows, toppled trees and landslide-blocked highways from the quake, which hit at 2:07 a.m. local time.

Red Cross spokesman Luis Huertas said a 64-year-old woman in San Jose died of a heart attack and that several people suffered minor injuries. All the summit figures were reportedly unharmed.

The U.S. National Earthquake Information Center said the quake had a magnitude of 6.2 and was centered 30 miles south-southwest of San Jose.

Falling trees knocked out power to the area around Quepos and the beach town of Jaco, said Rebeca Madrigal, spokeswoman for the National Emergency Commission. Parts of the capital also briefly lost power.

The police station on the Pacific island of Damas reportedly collapsed.

Jorge Rojas, a security official at the hotel where the summit is headquartered, said some of the leaders fled their rooms when the quake hit. He said none had been harmed and that there was no damage there.

At another hotel nearby, some people sobbed with fear as they ran from their rooms.

The king and queen of Spain and officials from 19 Latin American nations were attending the summit, which formally opened Friday night. Six heads of state had sent lower-ranking officials and some, notably the president of Mexico, had reportedly left Friday night.

That was the Del Rey....but the chicas were running from PacoLoco's room. We have not confirmed why as of 7am this morning, but first reports indicated it had nothing to do with the earthquake.

YES... It was quite a ride....

I had just went to sleep with one of my favorite Nicas holding me and then it hits. I at first thought that she was feeling a little frisky again and then realized what was going on.

Folks staying at the Prez were running wildy for the exits and gathering out in the streets.

Quite the experience!!

Pura Vida!

Yikes, being from California and having experienced quite a few quakes I can say a 6.2 can be a heck of a ride.

Must be something in the air:

A 6.1 quake was recorded this afternoon off the coast of Guatemala.

Aye, it is the Ring of Fire going off! Mount Saint Helens started it… California brothers you might as well spend the winter in CR: the Pressure is let off at both ends now but, must be building up in between.

Anybody have a look at Vulcan Arenal or Poas lately?

I can't believe that I spept through the whole thing. No I didn't have a chica with me. No Paco I didn't fall out of bed. I heard on TV that 5 people were killed. See guys don't come here. We have dangerous earthquakes and thieves like what just happened to LV Steve. OK the truth is that it's still a shitload better than anywhere else I've ever been.

First night in CR......Just settled in with a little chica and boom eartquake...

girls everywhere running home to their K*ds.......

Oh well......back up the hill to get another. Being from California it was sort of funny watching all the girls run out of the rooms naked. Had to pull mine back in to get dressed
