Are the chicas worried that they won't have a job or that they will have to start doing ticos.
How soon do you think we'll start seeing changes if she really targets prostitution?
if this happens. how many of you guys living in CR will reconsider where you live?

I talked to my favorita colombiana when I was down in Sept, and emailed her the day after the election. She, of course, knows that The First Rodent Elect does not look favorably on P4P, however she said that she will wait and see what happens.

If it turns bad, she said she can always go back to Medellin.

Unless they show up one day and either there are no gringos at the HDR or the building is closed. They probably do not even give it a second though.

They are concern as much as we do. I was riding with one in her car on my last trip and I ask her who she will vote for in the election. and she sure did not say Laura; she explain her reason; she think that women will not be free to do what they like to do as they are now.

She explain that Costa Rica cannot stop men from the United State coming to Costa Rica. but the new President can start having the women put in Jail. and then women would be scare to talk to America or foreign men in bars or on the street.

From my conversation with the girls I could see she is well educated a graduate of one of the University in Costa Rica she has a job she works for her father in his business but she like to do what the other girls do. it gives her extra money and by that Citron she was driving me around in I can see what she mean.

I'm sorry but I have to respectfully disagree with most of the responses here. First of all....the people here in CR (yes Putas are real people too) take their elections more seriously than we Gringos. Were there parades thru capital cities in the U.S. when Obama won the Presidency? The parades went well into the night in SJ after Ms. Laura won.In the U.S. there is always a pretty good percentage of "don't give a shit attitude" as to preference. Not so here in CR and Latin America as a whole. Everyone has an opinion and seems to care.

I was with a regular Tica of mine the other night and SHE brought up the subject. She was concerned about what Laura might do,and how it would affect her ability to support her Ch*ld and her Mother.

As far as what she will do and when,I agree with most of what Bang Bang has written. "Who knows". Remember this is the woman who when given just 2 weeks in charge, closed all the Casinos in the Country for 9 hours a day to satisfy her "hotsy totsy" constituancy under the guise of reducing the opportunity for chicas to get into prostitution. She put 3000 hard working people out of work to make her friends happy. Of course after she came to her senses, AND won her party's nomination, the issue has become cloudy once again. ( some open at 3pm and some at 11am) Let's hope for a lot more of "good 'ole Costa Rican cloudy" where a lot gets talked about and not much changes. I think she is more likely to put pressure on prostitution here in CR like she did with the phony closings of the MPs a while back. The DR has felt pressure for a long time but they deal with it. Think how mongering would be affected by municipal immigration raids twice a week at most of the places that have loose women plying their trade. Even if they just check passports of the Gringos,there comes a point where it's just not worth going there.

I asked 2 chicas about it, neither a Del Rey girl. One voted for Laura, the other thought the current party was corrupt and was looking at Guevara and Solis. If it ever does get around to closing the DR, or making it uncomfy, I predict it will be like pouring water down a gopher hole. The girls and guys will find another hangout, very quickly. Or they'll just take to the streets. A law can't take away the fact that there are a lot of girls who depend on the Yanqui dollar to feed the Babi*s. I'd LOVE to see a protest march, in their micro skirts.

I cannot say how serious politics is in all latin america, but can say that in Puerto Rico they are very serious. An old friend once refer to politics as the Puerto Rican national pastime. There are rallys and marches everywhere and you definately don't want to get caugh with the wrong colors (every political parties have their own flag and color). I was only there for one election, and I had all three flags for all three parties down there. It is serious business.

Personally I welcome the changes, maybe in a selfish manner, but how hungry are these girls going to be if the DR shuts down?

VB is right on as usual!! The immigration raids are exactly what I have heard the opponents of "tourist mongering" mention as a means of curtailing the activity. Only difference is what I have heard is "every hour on the hour", not twice a week! -- not really feasible in my opinion to do it that often but "who knows"?

This Idea that all the chicas (and latinos in general) are stupid, un interested, or un caring people is very typical of the gringo nieve mentality of being better, smarter, more involved, than the rest of the world. When was the last time you saw on election day, 1000s (yes thousands) of cars (even taxis) driving all over town honking horns and waving party flags; or dozens of parades going on almost all night?? When was the last time you saw a 75% turn out to vote in any election in the USA--that is a normal turn out in almost all latin countries!!

In the weeks before the election, I listened in on many conversations by chicas in the SL concerning the election; and the majority were afraid of Chinchilla and what she might do to their livelyhood. I honestly do not remember talking to a single chica that was not very aware of what was going on. Who knows though--maybe I just associate with a small but more intelegient and involved group of chicas

I would guess NONE... since the primary target would be gringo gulch. There would still be hundreds of working women available to expats and us frequent travelers that have contacts and enough sense to keep a low profile.

I would agree with Pacoloco! Well maybe a very very few might move somewhere else, but most of those would be guys already thinking about making a move. I think most who live here are more or less like me. The majority of the chicas I session with now are no longer working regularly anywhere and only see a limited number of regulars. Or, if still working in a MP or SL or HDR, I call them to come see me. Actually I have enough phone numbers and names that if I started with the 'A's and worked my way down the list i would most likely be dead of old age before I could get to the 'Z's. And I know several other guys with just as big a list.

And, just as in the USA, though prostitution is illegal in almost all areas, it exists virtually everywhere and guys living in a specific area know where to find the working girls. 5000 to 10000 working chicas (depending on who is counting) here are NOT ALL going to just quit the business just because things MIGHT change. And as I have stated before; the people I know that are involved in the Chinchilla side of the government have indicated there is no desire to outlaw nor close the Tico MPs.

Can only speak for myself. I would welcome the change and will continue to live here. I rarely like most permanent resident need to venture into the gulch to find companionship. Closing down the HDR would have zero impact on me and would most likely flood the market outside the gulch with more chicas.

I'll add my vote to those who won't be moving. Like ID and others have said, the gulch isn't the center of the world if you live here. I never have to leave my apt. to find company, the girls call ME. If they feel I'm getting bored, they set me up with friends. Not my idea, theirs. Closing the gringo joints won't stop prostitution, but it may curtail the Hawaiian shirt and Bermuda shorts crowd, which is the desired result.

I don't think Laura or any of the powers that be really care about eliminating prostitution any more than they care about eliminating poverty. They just want it out of sight so they don't have to think about it.
