Does anybody know if this is a temporary "pilot" program or is it permanent?

It appears to be permanet to me. Or at least I believe that it is "intended" to be permenent. Or at least as permenent as ICE can make it. Heck, they even updated their website with the prepago info. I wouldn't have thought that they would get around to that for moonths or years after the service started!

The prepago users guide says that, besides their agencies, you can buy from "microagencies" (whatever those are) and "authorized retail outlets". I would imagine that this might include some of the "better" cellphone shops.

There is a number you can call to find a place to buy:
800-PREPAGO (800-773-7246)

I did it at Mas x Menos. They did not actually give me a card. It was a register receipt with a 14 digit PIN. You call 147 on the phone with the prepaid SIM choose option 1 then enter that 14 digit number. In about 15 seconds you receive a text message with the new balance and expiration date.

Do you ask the cashier for a prepago or is it something you pick up in one of the aisles?

I paid at the window where the Ticos pay their phone and electric bills.

At the Mas x Menos down the street from the presedente hotel the window is immediately to you left as you walk in.

You can’t miss it.

It looks like this is only a trial afterall. I figured it was too good to be true. The CR government will always find a way to Phuck up a good thing.

Just got back from ICE office so they could help me out with a problem. I was told they did end it last week. The clerk does not have information about the future of the program.

Remember those who have a sim card that it is important to get it filled each and every month the minimum with amount or your number will expire. I will leave my phone here with a friend to do that for me until my return tirp.

So I can keep refilling mine?

But how do I do it now? Mine expires Sept 21st, I won't be back till mid-October.

Any ideas?

Would anybody who is going to CR in the next week be willing to take my card and refill it? It expires 9/21. You can use it while there and return it to me when you get back, I just don't want it to expire.

Drop me a PM.

Could someone who is going to CR in the near future please stop by the ICE booth in baggage to see if they are still selling the prepago SIMs? You don't need to buy if you don't want to. Just see if they are still selling the SIMs.

I think that is only way that we will know if the program is still active. People outside of the airport don't seem to be familiar with the program.
Muy Tico.

Yea the program is still active. ICE wanted to get the bugs out of the system and get the jump on the competition. The other companies will be offering services next year.

In other latin american countries the prepaid cell service has the biggest share of the market. It fits the culture.

It's dead... it's active... can somebody find out for sure.

Can you get a new sim card at the airport or are they only refilling existing numbers?
