Does know if when making a call from CR to the US, does the caller ID show up as Private or does it show up as area code 506? This could be problematic when calling the "significant other" from CR if the area code shows up on her caller ID.

From a landline direct, it shows up on my home call ID.

From a cell direct, it shows up as "Private" or "Out of area"

Using a pre-paid calling card, it comes over with a bunch of random(?) numbers 000-014-5712 or 011-401-54210-1144, but never has 506 in it.

Use *67 to block the number you are calling from if from a LL. I believe this is universal and will work from anyplace in the world.

Set the cell phone you are using to "Do not show" caller ID and then call. It also depends on the US based carrier whether the area code shows up.

I would try it first by calling a friends home/LL phone first, then his/her cell phone.

Or just default to the post by Orange and pre-empt it; if you call the significant other from CR.

I think it depends on what they're calling from. Sometimes I get calls from CR that show the entire number, sometimes it comes up as "unknown". What the hell.... roll the dice !!!

I doubt that it will work in CR. They have almost no additional services other then basic phone service. The only 2 I know of, both at an extra charge off course, is have your number show up as private if the other person has caller ID and caller ID.

This topic has come up before (not surprising, given our membership).
Lok at these (and don't forget about Skype and other VoIP options):
www.costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=21656
www.costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=27663

The ultimate option is our Sponsor The Alibi Network (pricey but said to be foolproof).

The calls I've received from Costa Rica showed a variety of different types of numbers in my caller ID here in the States.

If the person is using Skype or another computer-based telephone service, I sometimes see a local number (i.e., SoCal). Calling this number back doesn't work.

Sometimes my caller ID says that the incoming number is blocked. I don't know if CR cells or landlines have this ability or if this is just the default from Internet cafe phones.

Sometimes caller ID says that the number is Unknown. Also Internet cafe I think.

If the person uses a calling card (i.e., ICE), it shows up on my phone as +506 199 xxxx xxxx. The x's being the actual 8 digit CR number whether cell or landline. The '199' or similar indicates the calling card.

Finally if the person just uses their regular CR cell or landline, that shows up as +506 xxxx xxxx.

Regarding VOIP, I don't know if all of the services show up similarly here in the U.S. I'm pretty sure that Skype gives a local-looking U.S. number, but I don't know if it does this all of the time. Probably Vonage is similar, but I'm not sure. I've heard that Magic Jack will just show the user's assigned number.

I don't know what a regular U.S. cell phone used from CR to call home to the States looks like on caller ID in the States. I don't have any 'significant other' issues, so I never worried about that. I do know that it's very expensive at around $2/minute.

This is correct. When you buy the Magic Jack, you set up your own phone number. You choose the area code (I'm sure most people use their local area code), then you choose the first 3 digits of the phone number. MJ assigns the last 4 digits. When you call home from CR (or from anywhere in the world - except United Arab Emirates), it'll show up on their caller I.D. with the local number that you chose. Problem solved.

MagicJack is awesome. I wish I bought it a couple years ago when I was making 8-10 trips a year. I would have saved a couple hundred on calls.

I agree. I love my Magic Jack. I wished I'd bought mine a few years ago. But since I've had it (18 months), I've used it to call home from Mexico, Bahama's, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico, Hong Kong, Thailand, Cambodia, Japan and Costa Rica. And I've got friends who call me in my office on their MJ from Canada, Italy and the Turks & Caico's Islands. There's been times where I'm on the phone for an hour or two at a time. I have no idea how much money I've saved, but at a buck or two per minute for calls from some of these places - it's gotta be in the thousands of dollars. And the nice thing is..... I NEVER get a phone bill !!! :o And I first heard about MJ on CRT !!! Gotta love it!

If you use Skype and purchase a calling plan you also have the option to add a local phone number to your account. If you do, the caller id will show up as that local number. This will also allow you to receive calls directly via Skype if someone calls that local number.

Here's a review of reviews of various Int'l calling options, including some not mentioned here (Yahoo Messenger, for example). It's a mess of reading but the answer for you is in here somewhere.

Magic Jack
www.costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=24828

free WiFi spots in CR>>a big shout-out to Brother Senordos for this
www.costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=29319

Skype

other options

www.costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=25573

This list isn't exhaustive and much of it doesn't answer the particular question asked.
