Just wanted to bring this up and hear some thoughts and opinions from the brotherhood. I always appreciate it when members share helpful iinformation or trip reports that are interesting and well written.

With that being said and not trying to flame anyone in particular it seems like we have so many members who have writing skills that would drive a 4th grade English teacher to the brink of suicide. Many times these posters have great info to share but their writing skills are so poor that it almost devalues what they want to tell us.

I for one really am thankful for those that take a little extra time to proof read and follow the basic rules. By doing this they are making things much easier and more pleasant for forum readers.

Yes it has been more than 20 years since I took a college English course but I do try to take one minute to proof read. My biggest petpeeve is t the guys who post 500 plus words with never a break just one line after another. You know the ones where you need tofollow the words with your cursor or you loose your place.

Once again I am thankful for the info but come on guys do everyone a favor and proof read and clean it up a little before you hit the submit button.

The thing that drives me nuts is when someone posts all in bold, it feels like they are saying, "Hey this is really important!"

Rainman,

I have proofread your post. Please make the noted corrections and edit. Thank you. :P Oh! ...and also please check your post for emoticonial correctness. Irish Drifter and others may unsure about the "spirit"and "tone" of your post

Rainman-
Please take into account that alcohol can be a factor. I'd like to see 4th graders write as well as I do after consuming as much alcohol as I do

Since your feeble little poll did not produce the effect you desired this is just another attempt to bring my name into a thread for no other purpose than to cause controversy. I have already registered my opinion on the subject:

https://costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=21514

so no need to reiterate it here. :D

Mr. Drifter:

Your remarks in the above referenced thread to which I assume you are referring to, were:

Irish Drifter wrote:
At the risk of offending the "grammar police" I believe the information exchanged here is more important than the grammatical correctness of the post.

However, if you read my remarks in THIS thread more precisely, you will certainly see that I was referring to your concern over emoticonial and not grammatical correctness. I reference the thread below and your remarks you made:

Has been written many times. A joke without appropriate emoticons is not perceived as a joke but rather taken literally. With so many new members, many who have limited experience in Costa Rica, it must be assumed that most posts are serious.

Which clearly indicates your opinion that a post should be clear in its intended "tone" and "spirit". :)

PR,
In the poll thread, that I think ID is referring to and where you nominated him (along with many others) for the CRT "Broken Record" Award, you did start out with the following remark:
Phoenix Rising wrote:
Is it IRISH DRIFTER? While a wealth of good info is graciously offered, he never misses a chance to CORRECT your post for grammatical, spelling or emoticonial errors and would even question the color of your pizza cheese?
To be honest I've also made that incorrect assertion before. ID does love to correct everyone, sometimes on the most picayune of items, but grammar is not really one of his pet peeves. OTOH, I'm not sure what effect he thinks you desired to produce in "your feeble little poll", since you also added that your vote went to Spanky, not him. Spanky did come out slightly behind ID but Florida got many more votes than either of them. ID seems to be suggesting here that the main purpose of that thread was somehow to personal embarass or attack him (even though the poll was appropriately placed in the "smack talk, funstuff" section, included 6 other members and was plainly just done in fun).

As you're probably already aware, I've personally seen this paranoid sensitivity only just recently, which I suspect you may actually have been thinking of when you made the comment he quoted
Phoenix Rising wrote:

In addition to the quote you cited, ID has said at various times:
Irish Drifter wrote:
If that was meant to be sarcastic or humorous you should have included an emoticon.
Irish Drifter wrote:
....All of this posted without a single emoticon to signify a remark made in jest makes it difficult to buy into your statement that you are just teasing....To me a single post with the appropriate emoticon indicates a little "leg pulling". Multiple post in the same thread with the same theme gets a little closer to being a vendetta.
Irish Drifter wrote:
...If you simply forgot using an emoticon then the comment was simply in poor taste. If you did not forget to put one in then the post is outrageous. ...
Irish Drifter wrote:
...Think of emoticons as inflections in your voice or as a smile or frown on your face. They are there to show the intent of your words since the written word can not.

Really do not care if you ever use an emoticon just do not complain when your words are taken literally :D ...
Irish Drifter wrote:
...Just a sugestion. Rather than an exclamation mark ! which is easy to miss use an emoticon like  . Written word can not convey sarcasm, cynicism, razzing, etc. so it is easy to misinterpret. If you want to use an exclamation mark better to use :!: ...
BTW, the names other members that he referred to in these quotes were edited out to protect the guilty, but they were all different people and none of them were me (that came later). As it happens, I actually agree with him 110% on all of these remarks, only that I'd add that there is also such a thing as an overuse of emoticons (FLORIDA     :x :P    ). I also agree 110% with ID that "information exchanged here is more important than the grammatical correctness of the post." However, on that I might also add a qualification that a few typos or grammatical lapses here and there are understandable when guys are quickly trying to get their ideas down and whipping off posts, but some posters do reflect a complete lack of 4th grade english when such lapses seem to occur every other word. But in any event, these quotes make it abundantly clear that your comment about ID and emoticons in this thread was entirely appropriate and well directed (and I guess since I agree with him that I must be one of the "and others").

Anyhow getting back to oversensitivity, I got into a row with ID when I did use an emoticon to indicate I was just ribbing him and he took it seriously anyway even after I tried to explain to him that I didn't mean anything personal by it (and was sorry that he TOOK it the way he did).
Irish Drifter wrote:
...And the inclusion of :P hardly masks your true intention...
Irish Drifter wrote:
...You can put 100 emoticons in an attack post and they do not change the intent of the message. ...

My message to our esteemed brother ID (which is offered with great sincerity and respect) is the following. We all GREATLY appreciate the HUGE wealth of information you bring to this forum, even if some aspects of your posting style or personality might sometimes irritate or annoy us. Get over it. DON'T take it too personally. Nobody is ever completely perfect or universally admired. Heck, just look at me! I know that many guys don't particularly care for the way I write (to put it mildly). OTOH, I also know that a LOT of guys do appreciate what I have to say, if not the way I say it. Just continue to be yourself, as that is all that you can be, and let the chips fall where they may.

Damm, some of you guys are worst than the gringa bitches complaining about everything. Go back and read your posts and everyone and I mean EVERYONE has some grammatical errors on their posts.

Complaining and bitching has blurred the whole point of this thread. Being that some members cannot write or project their thoughts to a post. It is a shame because many of them do have valuable information to give. I’m sure many lurkers do have the same problem. Unless someone volunteers to be the proofreader for CRT, it is something that we all will have to live with.

But I think that you bitches are just at much fault for complaining and hijacking threads as the guy who can barely write. Now, proofread that!!!

The only problem I see here - the original poster mis-pelled Grammer. It is spelled grammar with an "ar" not an "er".

Paco,
Of course it is. That is a deliberate form of humor called hyperbole. I suggest you look it up in the dictionary. :P Besides, some might argue that is also incorrect to agree with him even anything more than 10% of the time :P (no offense implied, ID  :)).
Chi_trekker wrote:

That is true. I guess we missed that because it was glaring us all right in the face in the thread title rather than being buried in the body text. As long as we're going to play the game of "spot the mistakes" that Rainman SAYS he left deliberately   there are a few more that the rest of you seemed to have missed. Let's see we've already mentioned the double ii in iinformation, the extra t before the and the missing space in tofollow. How about these other "mistakes"? There is no space in proofread but there should be a space between pet and peeve. You lose your place, not loose it. And how about the lack of commas in many places to indicate a pause or separation between clauses (as in "By doing this, they are.." and "Yes, it has been...")?

And, lest Rainman thinks we're only picking on him, how about Chi_trekker? I believe it is misspelled or misspelt, ie no dash needed and 2 s's.

Oh the humanity, what are we all to do? None of us can seem to get everything write.
(Unremittent proofreaders please note: emoticons used to indicate a deliberate mistake for humorous effect in the preceeding text)
