Guys, I have a Qualcomm World Edition Blackberry from Verizon.
If I want to use in San Jose do I just buy a card there od do I have to set up somihin W Vedizon.

Don't think ICE has a network to support blackberry data. Also, ICE doesn't have roaming with Verizon. You can't buy a chip because ICE is out of GSM numbers, and two, you have to be a CR citizen.

You can rent a chip from several companies, but the blackberry service will not work.

Verizon phones do not work in CR. Verizon uses CDMA technology (without a chip). CR uses GSM technology which uses a SIM card (chip) that you put in under the battery.

You can rent a cell phone from www.cellulartelephonerentals.com for $10/day, unlimited calls within CR and free incoming international calls. To call US, it's $1.25/min, but you can buy a prepaid phone card and pay $0.40/min.

This is an International machine & does use a Sim card for Most countries. But RIGHT, No Costa Rica. I guess the rental sounds like the Ticket.

Actually, Costa Rica has both systems. I know I have the CDMA from ICE. It actually works better than the GSM where I live.

It is more about Costa Rica and their state run system as to why you can not use a cell phones here. They only provide access to those that buy service from ICE.

CR has TDMA not CDMA. And of course GSM

TDMA is going to be phased out in CR also. In a little over a yr.

I had a TDMA phone for yrs and had trouble with reception in curridabat and sabanilla. No problem with GSM for me.

There are areas in Costa Rica where GSM service is better than TDMA service and other areas were the reverse is true. However, most of what I have read, and ICE's maps, indicate that TDMA works better in most, not all, areas.

Yea I have read alot about how good the TDMA coverage is but in sabanilla little or no signal . In curridabat lousy. I guess it depends where in SJ you live.

Over the years I think they have been improving the GSM coverage. For instance in Samara 2 yrs ago the TDMA coverage was good. This yr no coverage at all, NONE in 2 trips. The GSM was excellent.

After ICE gets the new GSM3 lines , over a million in a little over a yr , TDMA will be phased out. If I had a TDMA I would get a GSM as soon as possible.

You are right, I stand corrected

Why waste time getting a GSM line when newer technology is coming? Wouldn't it be more prudent to keep your working TDMA line until G3 lines are available?

Gsm is good enough for me , I still don;t know alot of the features. If I had a TDMA I would upgrade when the new lines are available in Jan.

And Gsm 3 phones are very expensive.

But your point is taken.

That may all become moot If the "sky is really falling" as the CAFTA opponents suggest. Cell phone service is going to change when those big bad gringo phone companies roll into CR and destroy poor little ICE.

ICE cannot compete against the big boys because they do not know how to compete.

They will go out of business and then the people of CR will be paying 3-4 times as much for their cell phones. This for sure will not be good for the Ticos.

But the big boys will offer more features and provide better service.

No more 25$ deposit , that is for sure.

Ok, Ok all this technical talk is going to make my head explode. I just an engineer.....
so rental would be my best bet (Right?)
