A little too much reality for some I'm afraid.

Try this link if the above does not work:
http://a.videodetective.com/?PublishedID=456301

If you click on the videodetective link, after the trailer of "Princesas" continue on to "Haven". A mystery/love story filled with corruption and deceit set in the Caymens with Orlando Bloom, Zoe Saldana and Bill Paxton. Looks like another good one.

I just saw the movie last week at the AFI Latin American Film Series in Silver Spring, Maryland. It is extremely well done in may ways and is quite moving. Although serious in ultimate message, it is clever and funny the way that many Spanish films can be. The real star of the film is a new Puerto Rican actress with the last name Navarez. The film is worth seeing at least as a glimpse of the mongering "industry" in Europe. It won top awards in Spain.

I saw this movie recently and loved it. The movie reminds me a lot of a Pedro Almodovar movie, especially Sobre Todo Mi Madre (All About My Mother). It is also similar in the regard that it is essentially a movie almost totally about women written and directed by a man, and he got it right. apparently.

In fact this movie goes to the same hilltop/park hangout of working girls that All About My Mother used. The Puerto Ricana actress that you are referring to is Micaela Nevarez, her first movie, and she is so hot! Reminds me of many a DR (Del Ray) Queen, though she plays a DR in the movie (Dominican Republic). I'd pay cien for her! (OK, but for two hours). Tall, pretty, thin, C-cups, long black hair, what's not to like? The other main character really nails the depressive, desparate women down to a tee.

The movie, essentially a chick-flick, really captures the emotions of the the working girls, their vulnerable positions, especially for the immigrantes, the desparation to find a man despite the life, the dangers, the ringing CELL PHONES. The competition between the ladies is laid bare, especially between the regular chicas and the new immigrantes (sound familiar?).

Of course, there's not a single positive characterization of a client in the movie; they're all brutish or violent. OTOH, a pleasant, genteel client doesn't make for much drama, no?

Here are a couple of links to the movie and Micaela Nevarez.

Damn! I'm jealous! I can't wait to see Princesas. It sounds like it's worth paying $9 for this film.

You have to love Pedro Almovador. All his movies are incredible. I think Bad Education was one of his best. But I still love Dark Habits, them damn nuns smoking pot doing drugs... great laughs!! Pedro Almovador creates a whole world within his movies like no other director has done so consistently. Also excited to see Volver.

Good to see some of you venture out to watch interesting films as opposed to the sheet that Hollywood puts out. The Chicago Internation Film Festival is right around the corner. I haven't seen the schedule but can't wait to attend several screenings.

Other movies I can't wait to see are Have, Babel, A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints... and Infamous looks a whole lot more interesting than Capote. See you at the movies.

I was actually thinking about starting up a film festival in Costa Rica... maybe one day.

monger on dudes!!

Sorry got the name wrong for the actress in Princesas. It is Micaela Nevarez as you say. I really think she got the part down right with the bureucrat weasel who kept promising working documents. I think the negative image of male customers was largely due to mostly street monger action. The opening scene where the girl goes to a hospital room to service a young man as a birthday gift with his friends watching was actually funny and not at all unkind to the mongers.
Other Latin films here in the series are: Rosario Tejiras from Medellin Colombia about a poor girl who does everything wrong but with gusto. Very big in Colombia. Another one from Peru was Madeinusa about a country girl who gets screwed over but triumphs in the end. Another is Sacred Family from Chile about bored rich K*ds.
My real question is: What about Costa Rican film makers? Are there any who do really creative stuff? It would be great if somebody did a National Lampoon style spoof on the HDR scene perhaps with some Robin Williams style parts about the nightime Morazon Park action.

"Caribe" by Esteban Ramirez is the first film in Costa Rican history to be submitted to the Academy Awards in 2005. It did not make the cut. I have not seen it myself but have yet to hear any postive reviews.

I would't expect much from a county where a large population of adults not only watch cartoons but they really seem to enjoy them. The TV programs I've seen in Costa Rica where pretty depressing; low budget production, bad acting (over-acting), terrible composition, poor shot selections and above all no directing talent whatsoever. It's quasi MTV crap.

Check out "Pixote" by Hector Babenco, from Spain. It's a great film with an even more interesting epilogue regarding the non-professional young actors in the film. This is one of my favorite films. It may be difficult to find. ****

Also check out "La Ley de Herodes" by Luies Estrade, from Mexico. It's one of the funniest movies I've seen in my life. The center of this movie deals with political corruption and most importantly prostitution and a great little whore house in Mexico. ****

This is for all you mongers out there who have a sexual addition..
--> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0428649/

"I Am A Sex Addict"
I enjoyed it. Be warned it is an arthouse film and it's slow but definitely interesting to watch.

And for those of you looking to meet a women from another country for marriage...
---> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0377088/

"Mail Order Wife"
This is sick, twisted, disturbing and funny at times, most of all a fascinating documentary. YOu will not be dissapointed.

Both films are available on Netflix.

Don't forget the popcorn!

Good news, for those of you who didn't get the opportunity to see "Princesas" because of it's limited theatrical realease it's now out on DVD.

Also would like to recommend the DVD "Cocaine Cowboys," This has got to be one of the most interesting documentaries I've ever seen!!

It's the tale of how Miami became flush with drug money and how that drug money built the city to what it is today.

what more can you ask for? Drugs, a former Puta know as the Godmother who orders over 200 hits, the Medellin Cartel, gringos making MONEY like it's growing on "trees on crack along with an interesting cast of characters. It is really a fascinating story.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Well I finally saw Princesas tonight and have to say WOW because Micaela Nevárez is smokin' HOT! What a beautiful creature she is to behold.

I would recommend this film to all you old loney fat drunk'n gringos back in the states wishing you were back in CR if for no other reason than to s ee Micaela Nevarez. I"M IN LOVE!!

It's a simple story with great perfomances from both leading ladies and you may find it heartbreakin' at times but do not miss out viewing this little gem of a film.

Check it out on Netflix, don't know if Blockbuster would carry it for content. You won't be disappointed.

Two THUMBS UP!!

I have to agree movies are movies & real life is a lot different. My bet is the majority of men that seek the company of the ladies down south are pretty normal guys that like some variety, sampling new goods without all the potential trouble & hassles that try to entrap them back in the States. There are more motives & weird angles at playing games in the States I feel than anywhere else.

I know there are plenty of psychos out there on both sides of the street but I would bet these are much less in numbers than the fairly normal guy that looks for some strange without all the headaches.

I do see some of the Latinas with some true signs of stress that they are going thru. I catch some chewing on their lips, picking at their finger nails, assorted tics or twitches etc. Many hide this when they know you are looking at them. When they know we are looking at them most smile, they know, most are not stupid. They do have it fairly tough, just put yourself in their shoes for a while. It is not too hard to imagine. I rather have my options than theirs any day.

I wish a real movie would come to light on the positives that prostitutes bring to some of our lives & us to theirs. I know our $$ help many & many put it to good use. Some get more help from us than their own family members. It is not all bad like many that want to paint this picture. The act is normal in a humans life cycle. It is the players choice of how to be with it all that makes it good or bad I would think.

We were designed & programmed to spread the seed. Most all normal good men I know have to constantly deal with suppressing his instinctive desires. Many of these little Darlings help relieve the sexual stress of single men which allows them to think clearer after they get that load off their minds. Depending on how a guy choses to use all this is up to him. I know I used it to make better decisions who I truly wanted to spend my quality time with. They should show how some of these hot little ladies of the night allows a guy to workout his natural desires so he can still tolerate his so called normal existence of maybe being married to a fat bitchy wife & keeping his family still together. Without these options some men will blow a gasket or two. Living double lives maybe living a lie but still be very beneficial to the good of the whole. A typical insecure society will always demonize sex out side the marriage since it isn't something they can really understand or want to understand.

Life is tough so cherish the great moments we find. I feel we all do the best we can with what we feel we have.

For some reason this whole thread got me thinking about what a woman (Gringa) recently told me in Las Vegas. I was with a group & there were far more good looking hookers working the men than I had ever seen before. Believe it or not one good classy looking one offered her services for a BJ for CIEN after I kept telling her I was too busy that night. That shooked me  ! They were even sitting & waiting to intercept you as you went to your room.

This one Gringa I was with said prostitution is so disgusting!!!! She said imagine how desperate a man must be to pay for it!!!! He must not be able to find anything else!!!! I was laughing so hard inside thinking if she only knew  :) ? I would never tell her of coarse but I would love to have hit her with the reality of the truth. My mind was wanting to say you have known me a long time & know I have NEVER been at a loss to have a nice attractive woman around. I would have loved to have told her you know how big of pain it is to have a woman like you to have sex with :? ??? All the shit & loss of freedom you have to go thru just for some pu$$y :? ??? Obvious they would never understand why Joe average or Mr. Handsome with $$ would chose a hooker over something wonderful like they think they are    .

Sorry TP didn't mean to try to ho-jack this thread but I needed to get that off my chest. Thanks  !
