I have always just used an ATM. My credit union gives me like 15 free transactions a month. Some of the machines in CR do charge a fee though. I always take out 100,000 C just to make it easy to track the total cost. On my last trip right around Thanksgiving I paid 202.23 per 100,000 or about 492 C/$. Plenty good enough.

K-by-me and I are Canadians and we were talking exchange rate from Canadian $ to Colonnes thats why the numbers are in the 390-425 range. You are correct the rate to US$ is close to 500

Just so you know, for you canadians, I ended up using the the ATM at the DR, and got an exchange rate of 420 to the CDN dollar, which was was 25 colonnes better than any offer I got for pre-buying here. I guess that answered that question! :D
