Do not know the location or the magnitude but we just got jolted by a fairly strong quake.

Just found it. It was a 5.1, twenty miles SW of San Jose.

15:27:53 (UTC) is 9:27:53 (AM) in Costa Rica. UTC has replaced the old GMT designation and CR is - 6 hours.

Hope I didn't put a hex on our paradise. I hope all is well in paradise. Although I did make a call to CR this morning and lots of people are nervous.

Paco,

I read El Ciego post with great interest and filed it in my memory if it ever became necessary to put it to use.

Having lived in Florida for so many years I never really gave earthquake survival a lot of thought. El Ciego's post pointed out how inaccurate & misleading conventional wisdom is on the subject.

I did not have to practice it this time because I was outside having coffee in the little ranchero were we gringos gather in the morning to solve the worlds problems.

There is a story on Tico TV that a tourist bus rolled off the road due to the quake and 42 people were taken to the hospital. As best I good understand it happened near La Fortuna (Arenal area).

I was lying in bed with my/our chica spooning when it hit. I really thought she was shaking the bed until I saw the look on her face. First thing I did was take a leak because I didn't want to run out of the building with a full bladder!

An update to the report of a tourist bus rolling over. It may not be related to the earthquake as initially reported;

A bulletin from AM Costa Rica @3:10 PM today:

Quote:
Tourist bus rolls over and 42 visitors are hurt

By José Pablo Ramírez Vindas
of the A.M. Costa Rica staff
(Posted at 3:10 p.m.)

A tourist bus rolled over in late morning today between La Fortuna and San Ramón. Some 42 occupants suffered injuries and six were hurt bad enough to be flown to San José.

The bus was contracted to the tourism firm Expediciones Tropicales.

The majority of those hurt were believed to be North Americans. One woman was trapped
inside the bus for more than an hour while rescue workers used mechanical devices to free her. She was believed to be the most seriously hurt.

The passengers were going to a canopy tour location near La Fortuna, which is in north central Costa Rica.

Those victims taken to San José went to Hospital CIMA in Escazú and Hospital México in La Uruca. Both are institutions highly rated for trauma care. No names have been made available.
