I read he was a typical tree hugger. It said that he would go out at dusk to find "fauna". I think he wondered into a coca field or something related to the narcos.

A well-respected molecular biologist not exactly a "typical tree hugger." Very sad

He doesn't sound like the type who was seeking prostitutes. He was in South America to conduct scientific research. Likely not related to sex workers, and probably robbed and killed by street thugs.
