Out of curiosity, how many members bring back "Salsa Lizano" from Costa Rica?

No, I don't work for customs. Just trying to settle a bet with a buddy. :D

Thanks for your input.

I think that Lizano is a brand name. I always bring back large bottles of "Chilero" hot sauce. That and coffee are my main things to bring back.

They must be joking.

It's on every restaurant table.

It's key to Gallo Pinto.

Used to be called Salsa Ingles and is sort of a tropical Worcestershire. It combined with Chilero make the best marinade for meat for the grill.

I always thought that salsa ingles was just vinegar. You learn something new every day.

I sometimes bring a bottle back but since that option wasn't available I chose "never". I don't use that much at home and one bottle lasts a long while for me. I occasionally use it as a condiment but never as a marinade (more into Mojo Criollo for that). I'll have to try it though. I too am surprised that so many regular CR travelers don't know what this is. It is a staple in CR and the prime ingredient in Gallo Pinto. In a pinch, you can definitely use worcestershire (sp?) sauce when making gallo pinto, but its not quite the same.

I'm with Tunaman 100% :!: It's Cafe Britt, and Cafe Rey (Grano Entero),along with Banquete Chilero, my family loves the Chilero and friends send money with me to buy coffee. I don't really care for Lizano that much,YMMV

I always bring these things back:

Salsa Inglesa

Salsa Chilero

the Costa Rican tabasco

Tirrazu Coffee

Centenario rum

and some bags of gnocchi

for some reason, the gnocchi over there is really cheap.

I used to bring back a small bottle of salsa Lizano on early trips. Then I discovered it was commonly stocked at the Krogers I usually shop in.

Although I've never brought any back, I really like Salsa Lizano. As someone mentioned, it's on many tables in restaurants in CR. The Ticos/Ticas use it like we use ketchup. That's one of the first things I learned about CR...they hardly ever use ketchup, only 'salsa'.
