I'm going to paint with a broad brush. At the national level (politically and the judiciary) Costa Rica is a progressive soyboi country. Carlito (the current president) would have been the perfect soyboi to play 'pajama boy' in the Omabacare commercial - in his footie PJs and big cup of hot chocolate.

And the criminals know it - criminals (the real kind) prey on the weak and thrive where they are surrounded by the weak. In the US (for example), if you commit armed robbery and get caught; you are charged, arraigned and if you get bail you have to make bail or you sit in jail until your trial (which might take a while). In CR? If you get caught, the judge tells you to come back for your trial. Unless you are a danger... you know, like Cuba Dave. :roll:

Yes, Dave got more 'preventive detention' prison time for his non-crime than murders get in Pura Vida Land.

Most Ticos are sick of it. The use of force to defend yourself is (technically) legal and lots of Ticos are arguing that the State has been unjustly on the side of the criminals when good guys dead them but the oligarchs, secure in their gated communities in Escazu, are ignoring them.

Of course this is a country where, when the National Assembly was debating a bill that would forfeit criminal gains from crime and corruption the committee reviewing the bill removed the provisions that would have allowed forfeiture of assets gained through political corruption... Why? Hmmm... It is a puzzlement.


You summed it up perfectly. I couldn't have said it any better myself, so there's nothing I can really add. I'll just say that the more acquainted I've gotten with Costa Rica, I've realized more and more the truth of what you say. People make it out as if Costa Rica is this utopian paradise. Any country that restricts my right to defend myself and punish the people who should be punished is no paradise to me.

Costa Rica has become increasingly crime ridden over the past decade. No longer can be considered a "safe place." I thought Medellin felt safer in the upscale areas. San Jose is such a shit hole of a city. Still a fun time though.

I think originally it was named that because the countryside is so beautiful, not because the place itself with all it's warts is a shangri la.

In spite of all the negatives, at 64, when I have a 22 year old stunning beauty squirming on top of me moaning and groaning, then blowing me and swallowing, it's "Paradise" in my mind, in spite of San Jose being a giant slum... :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

I tip my hat to you, sir. You won't get any argument from me on that. Anything is possible, but the odds of getting that kind of treatment from beautiful young women anywhere, and I mean ANYWHERE ( From Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Driggs, Idaho) in the USA is slim to none, unless one has tons of money, great looks and unbelievable game, or one of those 3.
I will also add that outside of San Jose, the scenery of Costa Rica is beautiful, but honestly, the only reason I have any interest in that country is because we can pay for time and companionship from the muchachas there and not worry about going to jail. If it weren't for the sex industry there, I wouldn't have any interest in that country, other than being able to practice my Spanish, which I have studied for years.

On a related subject, I just happen to have recently watched several of the "Death Wish" movies with the late Charles Bronson (RIP). Considering the incompetence of the governing authorities in Costa Rica and their inability to fight crime, "Pura Vida Land", as another poster called it, could use a Paul Kersey or two to help set things right. Sadly, it will never happen, though. :=(
