There was a perceived drug and crime problem. That would be one of the many issues we would attack in our attempt to create a better Jaco.

I stopped being interested right here. You don't go to a foreign country to "attack" their people, regardless of what they are doing. It's pretty much a no-brainer that you'll be thrown in prison.

The guy may be guilty as sin, I don't particularly care either way, but if you read that sentence as attacking people instead of attacking the issue of drugs and crime then you need to read a lot more slowly and carefully.

To me it read that he wanted to forcefully impose his vision of what he thought Jaco should be.

Seems like most of the real horror stories I hear here about being ripped off were not by the locals but by Americans preying on fellow Americans. If the crime happens here there is no recourse in the states. I have no sympathy for swindlers and thieves. Can't do the time, don't do the crime. Don't even think of doing the crime here if you can't handle dealing with the system here.

..people who think it's their personal job to change other people's countries to their own image. That's what the US Gov't is for.

Yes they have had a good "teacher", but Bashful, look at all the gringos who come here or to another country, not a part of, nor owned by, nor controlled by the USA but an independent separate country, for sex with Latinas and then spend ALL their time complaining because everything is NOT just like in the USA!! Not just complaining but often they even get mad!! Look how many posts on CRT are complaints about something "muy Tico" and the poster "just cannot understand why it is different!!

My comment to anyone who goes to any other country outside the USA and then complains about it not being the same as the USA: Go back home and stay there!! Don't try to change everyone and everything to be just like the USA! Many people like just the way they are and would not trade their life style for that of Gringos for anything!! After all when visiting another country, you are just that--A VISITOR!!

The only serious issue I have had in Costa Rica involved an American when he stole my iphone. Had I not grabbed his laptop off his bed and threatened to smash it on the blue marlins bar in 30 minutes, I probably would not have seen my phone again, and he would probably not have seen a sunrise again.

EXACTLY BangBang...What is the point of leaving the USA if you're just looking for a place exactly like the USA? I thought being out of the USA and experiencing CR was an incredibly fulfilling experience (in more ways than one). Now I'm back in the USA and back in the rut of working my ass off, not sleeping much, stressed, hearing constant BS on the news/social media...blah blah blah. Jesus, it's mind numbing. There isn't a day that goes by I don't wish I was back in CR instead of in the USA working on my first heart attack and an early death.

It is, but keep it in context. It's great because we get to leave. It's a great place to visit, just don't be too sure you'd want to live there.

Totally agree!! Have lived out of USA before in A 3rd world country for a couple years. After 3 weeks the honeymoon phase subsided! Definitely a huge difference between living and visiting a place. I know I only have a small fraction of the real CR experience. If I were to ever consider living there in the future I'd probably do trial runs of a couple months at a time. As much as I love the place there are undoubtedly challenges and frustrations that would inevitably come my way that I would only see by being there longer.

Well, I had a blast in CR and if it's in the cards I plan to return many times. Sure it's a 3rd world country but that's just part of the charm. As far as living there goes...not a chance in hell. I'll stick with the USA, warts and all.
