I asked the short street K*D? who is american if shoeshine boy died. He told me he wasn't dead but is very sick and wanted to take me over to see him. I declined not knowing what that might get me into.

I doubt it, I spoke with his good friend "Rudy" when I was there last (June) and he told me he was going down hill fast, getting in fights, doing lots of drugs, homeless, also I knew him about 10 years and I saw for myself he was doped up, slurring, looking really bad and years ago he was always proud of his appearance, wearing a suit and tie...

It very sad, he seemed alright for a street person. He always knew me when I was in town.I would give him a mil years ago to walk with me across the park at night to where my apartment was. I felt it better than paying a taxi 2mil for 500 or so fare.this way he earned the money instead just a hand out.He seemed to work hard and dress in his suit while living the life of a street person.

His real name is Jose. Keith from the Horseshoe helped him a lot. He bought him one of his suits if not the first one and made sure he had something to eat. He always called me by name and would give a hug(I didn't care that much for the hug). I would give him money and Jose would say I'm going to eat or get a room yea right. We all knew what he did with the money. I haven't seen him on my last few trips and of last week why I was down Gringotim pm me and told me about it . :( :(

With all his failings i see SHOE SHINE as a lot more man than you with your sick attempt at humor.

I'm saddened by hearing that Shoeshine is deceased.

Actually, he was one of the true "gentlemen" living on the streets of SJ. Not pushy but polite in his association with gringos that roamed the brick streets of the gulch.....at least as far back that I knew him. I think a lot of us donated to his keeping alive. He was not dumb and was very street wise...one would have to be when living in and out of the shadows among the thugs that preyed on gringos as well as the locals.

I use to have pics of him with the "church lady" and some other known characters of the gulch but lost them in computer crashes. I'm glad that he was in my video Cardboard Inns. Several times he walked with me back to the President holding an umbrella when it rained...and also when real late, to provide some security.

I'm glad to have known him. May he rest in peace.

Is he the small guy with curly hair who walked around at night giving shoeshines for tips? Met him at the Poas Bar.I used to give him money even when I wore tennis shoes. I remember one time close to Xmas, I gave him 10 mil and told him to take the night off. He started to cry. Super nice guy. R.I.P.

RIP to those in low places carrying the burden of those too weak to bare their own. If the shoe fits, wear it.
