Don used to hang out at the SL until he left for San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua a few months ago. Usually wore a beret over his gray hair. Could be a bit feisty at times on the board. He had the distinction of being banned from the DR for steering newbies to other venues. When he didn't respond to a couple emails I wrote Glenn from the old Time Out Tavern who opened a place up there. Glenn wrote back that he died in a local hospital from heart failure about 6 weeks ago. Adios amigo!

Thank you for posting. :)

I don't believe I ever met him, but certainly remember his handle; its distinctive. Sad; RIP

BTW.....I know there was talk that my friend BB57 was banned from the HDR for doing tours of other places some years back that originated out of there - and while I agree 110% with Leadbonanza's sentiments, short of getting on a soapbox and making a speech, how did management at the HDR even know he recommended other places to newbi's? The DR is one of those places that you could be dead, in a corner, for a week and they would just sweep around you, if you take my point  Just curious.

To answer the question about how was he banned, I was told one of the bartenders overheard him suggesting there was better food, better drinks and better chicas at the SL. That bartender passed it on to management. Of course, the DR and all the CRT sponsors are the best places to frequent in San Jose. Everyone knows that. :D

LOL I remember that.

I won't speak ill of the dead. But what he said to some soldiers on leave in CR from Afghanistan challenges my restraint.

I got to know Don the hat very well when I lived in SJDS. I am very sad to hear of his passing. He was only 63.

SJDS is risky medically speaking for the older set. The clinic their is a joke, lacking even sterile bandages. I met an older woman who had a minor cut on her leg that needed stitches. At the clinic they did not disinfect the cut before they stitched it up. Of course she got a terrible infection. They should have at least poured some 5year flor de cana rum over it. Bad place to have a heart attack. I heard that he could not get out of bed, something that had happened to him before. I understand he was taken to the clinic in SJDS first then taken to Rivas which is about 30 minutes away. I do not think Rivas has much in the way of medical facilities either. I wish he would have been rushed directly to the private hospital in Managua. That would have been at least a 2 hour trip. It is one of the best hospitals in central america.

Don was a very intelligent person who had some strong political views. He was a veteran who served on nuclear subs in the Vietnam era.

May he rest in peace.

I will miss him. Strong opinions, yes, but still interesting to talk to.
