Claro and Movistar have some cheap phones that sell for around $30 that you can buy and use while you are here.

Virgin mobile is the carrier. I've always had phones unlocked in Thailand with no problem and thought I might be able to do the same in CR. Will be making my maiden voyage to CR in December. Gracias mi amigo.

Virgin Mobile won't work down here (CR). We use the ATT type technology with a sim card.

Go to Amazon and search for unlocked phones. You will find a good Nokia for under a $100 that you can use here. When you land in CR you can get a sim card with number and minutes at the Kolbi booth by baggage claim. Kolbi is like Virgin Mobile for CR.
