As a reply to Orange I'd say, with one exception, you nailed it - I will disagree with you - a lot - about Newbi's getting their question(s) answered in the past - the board of 5+ years ago was famous for seeing the first few posts in response to a newbi - or any question, for that matter - "Do a search" and often another few posts about how the question was asked and answered just a few weeks ago.

I often will answer a question but am amazed at the cluelessness of some - did you not ever leave Bugtussle??? For many, I guess not

Some guys get their feelings hurt when guys call them out on posts - while I think there are some who are really not articulate, and are famous for one sentence "shots" many just don't want to deal with being critisized - I spent 35+ years in sales so I have fairly broad shoulders, and also figure if I'm going to dish it out, I need to be able to take it  But a lot of guys say, "WTF do i need this crap for" - I enjoy Costa Rica, the board and posting.

I think we lost some guys - like El Ciego, who rarely posts b/c its difficult for him, but was a great contributor, BangBang57 - agree or disagree with some of his posts/positions, was a great source of knowledge, and one of the most giving people you could ever meet when it came to showing others the ropes, plus is a great guy. Bilko, another smart, knowlwdgeable person, is busy with other things and seldom posts - Zippy - who I believe is dead - Florida, while I had real issues with his posts, yet respected his sense of humor has passed - I could go on and on - often its a core of guys on a board such as ours, and many, sadly, are gone.

Agree with many, many of the post here. Would add that many of us old-timers simply grow out of the mongering life. Yes, there are old-timers out there who will have their last session the day that they die. But, I believe that each individual has their own "season" of mongering, some for a lifetime and some for a weekend. Mine was 35 years plus.

Believe the key for a site of this sort is new blood in the 30-40 age group being attracted to party and post and have their post well received and promoted with no hijacking of threads and keeping the banter among friends minimal by using the private messaging more. Just my thoughts.

Have a Great Day,

Dave

agreed, Dave. New blood needs to be encouraged to come in and replace the old, while still carrying on the better aspects of the board culture. We're not doing that now. We're driving the potential new members away by not providing enough information of value and by not being tolerant of people in the learning process.

Well put. Newbies are the lifeblood of forums.

Have a Great Day,

Say it ain't so! Has Zippy passed away? I enjoyed his posts from about seven or eight years ago.

I don't remember hearing anything about his passing away. Where did you hear that Scuba?

Zippy was an enigma. I remember when he was an active poster and the talk on the board then was who had ever met or even seen him. Some questioned if he had ever even been in Costa Rica.

Perhaps he just changed his writing style and reemerged as Greengo.

I hope Zippy is still out there and doing well.

A not ordinary guy with a sense of humor to match.

100% sure he existed and visited Costa Rica.

About 70% sure I've talked to him a couple of times.

The reason I say 70% is that he did not identify himself.

He did things is on way and preferred to stay in the shadows.

Whoa guys - I said "I believe....." - reason I do is he has not posted since July of 2010 and there is no record of the last time he was even on the site.

I also sent him 2 PM's - one fairly recently, its still in my out box - asking about him, how he's doing, etc - no response; nor was there any to the previous one sent over a year ago - Zippy also had over 2600 posts, so he was not one to "hide" - all this led me to believe - believe - he may have passed on - guys who posted like he did tend not to just cease posting without any explanation. And as I mentioned, its coming up on 3 years since his last post and likely his last visit to CRT.

While I did not know him personally, I always enjoyed his posts.

Being in that grave so long sucks......Let me dust off a little... :D

Dave said something very true IMHO "Would add that many of us old-timers simply grow out of the mongering life. Yes, there are old-timers out there who will have their last session the day that they die. But, I believe that each individual has their own "season" of mongering, some for a lifetime and some for a weekend. Mine was 35 years plus. "

This is very true for myself. Funny how one day I just realized that I had better things to do & had my fill of running around. One day I was mongering & it just hit me like when Forrest Gump just stop running (shit happens  ). Do I miss it.....sometimes....did I enjoy it....hell YES....will I do it again...I doubt it.....would I recommend others try it......yes if they are honest with themselves about what is real!

Scuba & Gringotim thanks for your concern & Lee you nailed it!

What really troubled me & why I am making this post is I saw that a good friend of mine had passed away. I knew Gary Zelman well & saw he died in 2011. I had not stayed in close contact with him for several years....just too busy. He was a really good guy that I hung out with, played tennis & cards with. I met him in 1999 when he 1st came to CR.

Someone also informed me that Irish Drifter had passed away. Irish & I had a few battles posting LOL but I always had respect for him & I am very sad to see this.

At least both guys had the dynamic experience to live an interesting life in discovering Costa Rica. RIP guys hope to see you in the next life.

When I wrote the OP I was concerned that the hopes I expressed in it were going to fall on deaf ears. I fear that's exactly what happened, although I thank some of you who stepped up in here to show some support to the ideas that made this board the best one out thre for so long. Unfortunately because that's no longer the case it might instead just be time to say so long to the board. I hate to pull the plug, but I truly am having the trouble finding enough value on any particular visit to make it even being worth taking the time to login. I hope it picks up soon.

Good to know you're still out there.
