I have a 3 major providers. Ice/Kolbi, Claro and Movistar. Movistar and Claro are far superior in my opinion and 1/2 the price of Kolbi. Also, in most areas. reception is better with Claro and Movistar. The reason I keep my ICE line is because it's post pago and I have had that number for years. Good luck.

AT&T to enter the CR market via Claro. I hope that means lower int'l rates.

Hard to say. I guarantee you AT&T rates will be higher than Claro or Movistar. Currently calls back to the states is about 35 colones per minute or .07 cents. Ice is about 0.10 a minute. Doesn't pay you to get an international plan when pre-paid plans here are so cheap.

Kolbi is 17 cents per 160 charcter text to the US, 34 cents a minute for voice to a cell (as opposed to a house phone), that info is readily avaialbe on their web site. Their int'l pre-paid plans not much better, marginally so kind of stupid they even offer it. Hopefully, Kolbi will get a clue.

But, there are many rural areas where only Kolbi is getting a 2-3 bar signal whereas in the same area Claro or Movi are getting 1/2 bar to none. Both just got fined for their bs advertising saying they had excellent coverage in these areas, albeit by the govt authority that owns and runs ICE, but is the regulatory authority for the other two. But I can tell you first hand when I am 15 klicks east of Quepos I get 3 bars with Kolbi, 0 with my Claro.

What the other two carries charge per text or minute is not available online on their own websites. Boots on the ground that have those carriers should report, accurately from the source.

And I think I made a mistake--ATT is coming into CR with Movi which also owns 10% of ATT, not Claro.

Gersen, I keep my ICE for making outbound calls only. I use my Claro 95% of the time and just started testing Movistar on another phone. ICE internet was expensive, about 18 mil and service/speed was average at best. Claro charges .60 cents a day if you use it, is much faster and reliable. I buy a lot of cell phone and loan cell phones Free to my clients. Sometimes they want to keep the phone which is no biggie. I have now found that Movistar is the simplest company to get a sim card. No questions, no upfront passport required, easy greasy to get started for a mil $2. Fast becoming a big fan of Movistar. Also, their internet is .60 cents a day. I've said this for years before CAFTA, watch ICE scramble when they start loosing market share. They had it so easy for so long.

Obviously they are having problems with deregulaltion of the cell biz which ICE was forced to accept 2? years ago? Pain in the ass that someone like you who covers a broad range of CR daily has to carry 1 phone for internet and 1 for text/voice.

Brother Gersen, by the end of the month I will have some duel sim andriod phones. I am a avid Iphone user but would like to see how this works out. I keep the ICE Line because it's post pago and not pre-pago and have had that number for many years. It's cheaper for me to make out going calls with that phone. However, I use the internet a lot while on the rad, checking flight status, emails and so one. For that Claro is much better. Ice was killing me on the internet

Not too bad on those new rates BUT they have total data transfer capped at VERY LOW levels. I use a real ICE line that includes internet and my bill is rarely over 12K colones and I use it a LOT on the road, especially when I am waiting somewhere.
