Have a couple of trips to SJ under my belt and planning another one in a couple of weeks. Since it is an extended stay (at least for me) I will take some time to go visit Jaco but would like to visit another city as well. I am not expecting to find anything like SJ or Jaco but hoping that there is a city other than those two that would offer some mongering venues.

Depending on your stay, you might want to try a trip to San Juan del Sur in Nicaragua. Mostly beach with nighttime action.

As to other places "that would offer some mongering", I'd say practically every tourist place offers some as reported here, but not worth making a trip for.

For finding girls, not a good third-best option as has been mentioned. Some action to be found in Quepos and the Tamarindo areas but nothing reliable/consistent. Jaco has most of the adventure activities you might want available and do those kinds of things there as the transport from San Jose to do them is often a long drive and eats up a good part of the day.

For fun and neat things to see, I'd recommend the Arenal Volcano area. Hot springs, tons of wildlife and some great adventure activities and some of the best hotels in Costa Rica along with not-so-high prices. Second recommend would be Manuel Antonio for the beach, beautiful area, wildlife and adventure activities.

Been a few years since I've been to San Juan del Sur but I didn't see any reliable/consistent action there either. Not hard to get to from San Jose. Take a Tica/Nica bus to the border and get a cab to SJDS. It would be an all-day trip and not sure it would be worth it in my opinion. Panama would be even farther however...
