Twice I have been stopped and questioned by the policia in San Jose. I showed them a photo-copy of my passport that did not have the date stamp page. Maybe I was just lucky, but after they examined it, they said "no problemo," and let me go.

There's a notice posted at The US Embassy in San Jose.

"Original Passports are not required."

I saw it when I went to help my sister replace hers.

There is a photo store kitty cornered from Presidente that will shrink your passport picture and information into a laminated ID that fits in your wallet.
