Made the incredibly stupid mistake of forgetting to bring my "Macks" ear plugs from the States. Any suggestions re where I might be able to buy some ear plugs in San Jose would be grreatly appreciated.

Pharmacy across the street from Hotel Presidente has them.

Cant' thank you enough! It's amazing how something as simple as ear plugs (or lack thereof) can impact your vacation! Lots of construction going on near the Freebird. This pharmacy even had my preferred choice: "Mack's" silicone plugs, albeit at a grossly inflated price for 4 of them. Well worth it, under the circumstances.
