For example, there are two Hospitals in the San José area (Cima and Bíblica) which will take prompt care of service members, military retirees, and veterans with at least 30% service related disabillity.

Be very cautious with what the VA pamphlet says. CIMA & Biblica and now Hospital Metropolitano will accept Foreign Medical Program (FMP) but not Tricare. Hospital Catolica currently accepts Tricare but there are rumors that they are considering dropping out as both CIMA and Biblica did.

Although the hospitals do not accept Tricare some doctors will and off course you can pay the charges and then submit the necessary paperwork to Tricare for reimbursement.

Thanks ID.

I do remember reading where if one is to recieve receive services (other than emergency) from CIMA or Bíblica, one needs prior authorization and there are co-pays involved. However, just because a pmaphlet reads as such here in the US does not mean that it will be exactly the same way in CR.

It has always baffled me how a country with so many natural resources and no known geographical or political enemies can be as poor
and disorganized to the point to be considered a third world country.

I supppose the answer is to become informed about the services available and the benefits covered by their medical and health services before making any relocation decisions, be it temporary or permanent. Just my opinion.

Again, thanks ID. If anyone knows about CR and its culture, it is you.

Thanks for the info guy's that helps, I really prefer oxy in thew 40 mg and at night only so as to sleep with out getting up to take vicodin and percs which I prefer. But oxy was all that was sold on my last trip I don't know the cost as I didn't buy any.

The only pain reliever above over the counter was Oxy Forty which is just codeine and man does that stuff do a number on your stomach. I also need Oxy once in awhile to give the liver a break I already do watch how much vicodin I take as it is.

Right now it is the only thing keeping me from trying to see if I like CR on a long term move.

The cash price in the states is highway robbery as well.

Anyway Thank You!

I can relate quite well to your situation as I would REALLY enjoy living in CR.
I know it would give me a financial advantage with much better weather conditions. And who knows, maybe a romatic adventure could develop in time which would definitely save me a bunch of $$$s in mongering expenses.
As far as some of the meds, I could probably get some help from the VA since I found out there is a program that does assist Vets in CR.
I got to really think this through....
Good luck to you Smelvis.

Thanks Brother that is always the hope, many or I should say most people always assume us that suffer chronic pain take it for a headache and have no idea how life is impossible without it, I assume most of the people who kill themselves are just tired of fighting it. I read pretty much everything about it and how it ties into other medical issues (with my main Doc) I have so I know my limits and at regular intervals reduce my dosage down as far as I can to the point of pain I can live with temporally to keep me from reaching high doses, It's like an planned trip into hell but you have to do it for my own good. I do know for a fact I would go insane and that's a fact if I didn't have it. People have different levels of pain and those not involved have no idea but what they see on TV about opiate addiction oh sure it's true and the addicts have made it hard for people with real issues and makes me madder than hell.

For those who wonder imagine a broken bone and how it feels on the first day only it feels that way for us permanently our only hope is to numb it and hope it will stay in the background but it's always present.

Anyway said enough persona so good luck right back atcha Muff and anyone who deals with this sh**T

Dave

Well said. I'll be sending you a PM and we can compare notes (pain levels/sources) then.

Thanks, Muff,

As I thought, there's not much for me in VA benefits outside the US border. I've been through their complete evaluation process recently and have received the customized benefits manual they provide which lists exactly where you stand within their system of priorities. Since I'm 0% disability and non-service connected, I have to be within travel distance of a VA facility to get any benefits.

Before leaving the US, I had called a person who makes related determinations within their system. He said nada. But hope dies hard, so I was thinking something had changed or you might have seen an exception. Apparently not.

I'm going to rely on the massive VA benefits I have in the US as my catastrophic illness and hospitalization plan. Those benefits, coupled with a good evacuation insurance policy, will be an excellent interim solution while I wait for my cedula to be issued. After I'm in the Caja, I'll probably keep that in place as a low cost backup in case Caja can't schedule me in alignment with my needs and preferences.

This approach also enables me to drop Medicare Parts B and D, which are also useless here, and only double up on VA coverage but at a monthly cost I'd prefer to avoid.

BTW, you mentioned Spinal Stenosis. In many cases, it's quite treatable and responds well to new minimally invasive surgical procedures. If you haven't looked into what could be done, that may be a helpful strategy.

I totally get why family ties would keep you from the expat life.

Thanks and good luck.

greetings all ~ i am not sure which oxy (contin / codone) is available in cr but i do know the main VA hospital outside downtown (CIMA i think) did have them in stock at the hospital pharmacy & they were expensive but purchased back in 2010 & 2011 when i was traveling with a US veteran & we were able to secure permission to be able to import hydrocodone for him as he has cancer ~ quite a process initially ~ you have to write a letter & bring it to the ministry of health & have your request approved & once your medication has arrived there are circles & lines & fees to pay when you pick it up in person at the airport cargo terminal ~ but once you have done it once it is much easier from then on ~ so to all americans who require medication that is not available in costa rica who are considering living there ~ you should be able to get permission to import medication on an ongoing basis if required from the ministerio de salud next to hospital san juan de dios )~ the oxy available in costa rica is not carried by the pharmacies in town ~ hospital issue only (anything on the streets is not real.....) hope this helps

Hey Jriden46

What about 100mg Viagra? I know they have their generic version and ithas worked fairly well in the past. Specially if it's used promptly. I want to compare prices and availability.
Thanks
